I have a Compaq Computer and in the past it would play dvd's and it worked fine, but recently i reformatted my computer and now it will not read dvd's..:S

Do you have program like WinDVD or MS Mutimedia Player installed?
As yo know after formating the hdd you need to install tha chips set drivers too.
