embedded visual c++ 4.0 emulator troubles

I recently got a Pocket PC, and after using it for a while decided to download the development software from Microsoft and maybe make a few programs for my personal use.

After getting it all installed, and launching eVC4, I brought up the sample "Hello World" project that was included to test that things are working. I was able to get it to compile with little trouble. But when it tried to send the software to the provided emulator so I could test it, it can't communicate with the emulator.

The emulator launches fine. eVC4 just can't talk to it.

I played around with the configurations a bit, but really got nowhere. The main potential problem I can see is that eVC4 is designed to communicate with the emulator via ethernet. Only problem is my computer is a standalone system with no ethernet card in it. (A friend with broadband did the actual downloads for me, would have taken forever and a day via modem).

Does anyone know if I have to have an ethernet card in the computer for eVC4 to find the emulator? Or is there some other way around it?

I really don't want to have to test my programming on my actual PPC until I'm satisfied that the major bugs are worked out, but I'm sure not going to buy a NIC just for this. At least not right now.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
