What are some of your favorite misconceptions that newbs have about computers or computing?
My favorite: The computer is a bottomless pit. It requires no maintenance of any kind and will hold as many files as a person can forget and neglect to delete.

I don't know if this counts as a misconception, but it irks me the way my father always refers to his desktop background as his "Screensaver". H also e refers to his screensaver with the same term, and get's really frustrated when I don't know what the hell he's talking about.

Many, many times I have seen people refer to a high-level format of a hard drive as "restarting" or "rebooting" the computer. Sometimes I find that these are the people who call their whole computer the CPU and refer to their available/total hard disk space as their computer's memory.

It had always been a misconeption upon my part thinking that computers actually do anything; do anything more than keeping most of us from the real world. I am making progress in my thought processes. Sometimes I put corn on the keys and pretend I am a carney side show rooster tapping out messages from beyond. Let him who is without Win, cast the first .. (bin)

Uh - sure....... Anyway, those are very funny, but the topic is misconceptions, not misunderstandings. Here's another example: A network-dependent program on a slow network can always become faster by buying a faster computer.

yup, that more than anything is what I hear.
from a long time ago people would call the monitor a computer...
my friend a long time ago thought my subwoofer was my modem...
that windows is the only OS and that IE is the only browser available...

Yes, RAM and hdd mixups are annoying. I have people tell me all the time "I have 40gb of ram yay!"
n00bs.
My personal favorite: My comp will take care of itself. I never need to open it up and clean it out of anything. It's dustproof.
The above problem is most common with Dell users, I've noticed.

more ram is better, and thats all that matters, 1 gig of ram in a p2 166, why cant i play doom 3?
there are others that will cross my mind, im reserving the right to edit them into this post later

I dunno if this is a misconception, but I get so many people that refer to hard drives and ram together as "memory". "Im low on memory" or "I need more memory" when they refer to either one. Ive had people who bought more ram when their hard drive space was low and hard drives when they needed more ram.

Well Im an athlon guy, so my favorite misconception is that higher clock speed means better processor.
I must digress and add my favorite problem at work. We use roaming profiles at work, so when you login it pulls your profile from a storage server. Well about once a week we get trouble tickets from somebody that has a slow login time.....and when I get there they have multiple GB files on their desktop.... whats up with that?
