Gem GM-170B Color problems

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

hey ev1,

im having some problems with my new flat screen I purchased from Frys in Anaheim. It's a 17 inch Gem GM-170B, it's port is the one with the pins, sorrry I don't know the technical name.

The thing is every few seconds to every few minutes the colors flicker in such a way that the colors all turn tan colored. Example, the light blue will turn to dark blue, and the yellow will look orange. I have a Nvidia GeForce 4 mx440 card which came with my computer 1 year ago. My old monitor was a old viewsonic 8 I found in my garage and never had any problems. So I've brought it down to a few possibles. Can someone dimiss these if they are not the problem or if you know what the problem is then tell me?

-It may be a bad monitor, which is what Gem tech support told me
-Possibly a bad monitor cable
-Drivers. When I installed the monitor it was plug and play. It worked fine as far as I can remember, but the games I want to run, can't go into Open GL and other modes under those drivers. So I downloaded the latest drivers from Nvidia and installed em. XP Pro told me that these drivers weren't tested with XP, even though nvidia says they are. I installed em anyway and shortly thereafter the colors started doing this. I can't be sure this is the problem though, because I tried going back to plug and play drivers and the colors keep decaying.

If it makes any difference I have my monitor and my computer in a studio like setup, with a lot of steel around it, a cd player, vcr and tape player. I heard some interference might be getting with my monitor but im not sure.

The weird thing is that sometimes it does not decay and is regualar for up to 10 minutes and then it begins again. It's really annoying. Here is my full computer stats:

AMD Athlon XP 1800+
256 DDR PC2700 RAM
40 Gig hard drive
Nvidia GeForce4 Mx440 64mb
syntax motherboard

thanks

christian
