processor war

I need to decide between an Athlon xp 3200, Athlon 64 3000, or Pentium 4 3ghz. I've used Athlon for my last two computers and never had a problem, but the pentium puts out the same ghz as the athlon 64, and more than the xp3200. Need some help deciding. Comparison charts would be awesome.

forgot to mention, its for a gaming pc.

Actually, the P4 has the most ghz, at 3.0. The AMDs have less ghz. However, far and away the best of those processors would be the Athlon 64. They have an unreal gaming reputation.

Here's a nice little link I think you might find interesting: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipset...aspx?i=2038&p=5

You'll notice that in some cases, the 3200+ outclasses even the P4EE. Very impressive.

I have personally never used AMD, so my option is somewhat biased.

I have the a P4 2.4ghz . So my vote is to go with the Pentium.

I read a review somewhere that said the athlon 64 wasn't as good for gameing because it has to emulate the 32bit graphics, and did worse than the chips with the same speed. Is this true?

Don't think that's true, from what I've read the Athlon 64 is full 32/64 bit hybrid processor that is completely hardware driven. I have never heard of any emulation.

nope, not at all. a 2.2ghz athlon64 can outclass a 2.4ghz p4 easily

32-bit graphics is determined by the video card, which uses the same type of agp slot as any other mobo would.

a 2.2 ghz Athlon 64 is faster than a P4 3.0 ghz. Check the comparison I sent you.

I just got a chance to read the chart, and it helps. I guess Athlon has always had better gaming performance than a pentium. That's why I went with amd for my first game pc.

Not always if you look at the 2800+ and 2.8ghz P4 northwood, the northwood wins, OC's better, and was the all-around better chip. But Bix is right a 2.2ghz athlon 64 definately outclasses a 3.0ghz p4.

My opinion is somewhat biased too. I've only used Athlons (except at school). Had a 2000+, a 2700+ and a 3200+ Athlon 64. And with everything else the same I can tell the 3200+ is much faster than the 2700+. It runs alot cooler too.

So far I've run an Athlon XP 2200+, an XP-M 2400+ (oced to 2.4ghz), a P4 1.8, and a P4 2.66. I can tell you right now, AMDs are generally cheaper, and run quite well. I'm not a fanboy on either side, but I can say that right now Athlon 64s are the best gaming chips you can buy. hands down.

Thanks for the help. I'll shoot for the athlon 64.
