what level barbarian and what difficulty. barbarians and paladins have a hard time raising their dex to high enough levels to hit stuff since they have to sacrifice so much points to life and slots for resist. my amazon is level 61 now and her highest resist is 30 posion her next highest is -40 for fire and im starting hell diff act4. ive got a medium level barbarian but cant seem to find gear for any of the characters. i have to play my sorceress to get amazon stuff and my amazon finds barbarian crap. ive used 10 million gold on gambling just rings and not once did a +skills amazon ring pop up i got over 15 rings and amulets for + to barbarian sorceress necro etc... makes me want to hack the mpq file to make it more reasonable *sigh*

my new barb is on nightmare act2 now and he can actually hit things. maybe I'll finally get it right this time
this is probably the last char I'll ever make so I really hope I'll live through hell difficulty without dying a million times (again)

Level 67 Lance Bar.
It's not just hitting things. He doesn't even do half as much damage as he used to.
He used to kick ass and break dishes in hell/hell with 8 players in the game. He could do one-hit kills to a whole group of monsters with up to 3 people ingame.
Now he can't even put up a decent fight with 2 or 3 people ingame.

Mana/life leech doesn't seem to do too much these days. I think it definitely has been affected by the latest two patchs. I have read various rumors about another patch that is coming out, maybe that will fix things, but I doubt it. BTW my level 67 barb is having the same probs with being able to hit things, whirlwind used to take out cows by the handful, but now it takes two or three runs through to take them out.

reading thru the last patch info the barbarian to hit got nerfed big and on hell and to a lesser extent nightmare all creatures take much less damage from physical attacks. on hell all creatures take only 50% damage from physical and their resistances got boosted a great deal. my level 67 now amazon has a 2000ar and lists about 65-70% to hit just about all monsters. i tried making a barbarian and got him up to nitemare act2 before frustration set in and i wnet and tried the amazon. now im in hell act5 about to take on nithalak tonite and with a little luck take out the ancients and ball lard of the mountain. im not sure how i would go about getting abalbarian to high enough level to be effective im just grateful i got a 3000 hitpoint valkyrie to take the pounding for me. -70 lightning and fire resist sux.

if you're going to play the game and keep playing it, then do so and everyone should stop complaining about what's wrong.
if you're seriously annoyed by something that happened, just uninstall it.

Lets put it this way, have you ever been perfectly happy with anything? No matter what you have there will always be problems with it, even if they are just little ones. Just because I complain about D2 from time to time, doesn't mean that I am unhappy with it. The game itself is great, but Blizzard keeps adding patchs to it to "enhance" game play. So far I haven't seen much enhancement. When the last couple of patchs came out there were problems galore after, not before. Many things have changed since the advent of D2 and not all for the better, but thats life.

Hell difficulty finally feels like hell difficulty. Before was just too easy with good mana and health drain. Since you can't drain mana from undead and monsters immune to physical damage, it makes elemental damage a lot nicer to have now.
I use Immolation arrow to take out bosses vulnerable to fire and use a junky old lightning bow that does 1-350 lightning damage as a backup bow. Since bowazons lack a good lightning skill. Poison charms are also nice in hell diff.
Now when I have to kill tough bosses, I leave a few other dorky monsters around so I can steal mana from them as I need it. And Guided arrow with a good pierce skill rules for this.
I'm in act 3 in hell diff at level 72. Been playing nightmare on the players 8 setting and hell diff on the players 3 setting. Takes longer to kill but the experience and items drops are way better.
Oh, and take a look at my bow. Added a socket to it and put a Shael rune in it for 20% more speed.

i dont think that blizzard has enhanced a thing since they launched the closed beta. the game has only gone downhill since then. blizzard is trying to make an ultima online out of D2 and that is not going to happen. the problem with D2 is that it is getting farther and farther away from the original diablo. the thing that made diablo fun was that it did not take a lot of thinking or effort to play the game and u could easily hop in a game with friends and just have fun. each new patch to D2 takes more and more of the fun out of the game. none of the bosses in D2 are fun to fight, physical immunes are not fun to fight, and mix some of the one hit kill bosses with some immunities and u have a boss that is just a chore to fight.
an example of what is wrong with D2 is that during the closed beta a lot of folk got the sorceress to the mid to upper 30's and beyound in normal diff act 1 and there were no higher difficulty areas. lots of people started complaining that the sorceress was way to powerful because at level 35 she could clear the blood moor with no problem. blizzard takes all this in and goes "oh my cant have that" and first patch the sorceress is weakened so badly she can hardly kill a zombie. blizzard has this attitude about a lot of the classes and skills and each patch we see things get worse and worse. to me all the classes save the amazons are a chore to play they just arent fun primarily because none of them until they reach level 70+ cant kill anything on a dificulty level high enough to get good gear so they can kill things. and by that time one is so sick of cycling thru the easy parts with crappy gear u just dont want to play anymore. i think the problem lies with blizzard trying to force everyone including single play persons like myself to party up and play in groups.

You have a good point there Janna, and my opinions on the matter reflect yours to a T. In Diablo, I had leveled each playable character class to the highest (lvl 50) level. In Diablo 2, I cant seem to get past lvl 45 because it isn't fun to play. I get discouraged with the negative penalties. Point of fact, it blows as a single player game anymore (and I rarely if ever play multiplayer on Bnet). No more fun to be had with Diablo 2. It is either too difficult, or I am a horrible gamer concerning this game.

one other thing about D2 95% of all the skills are useless once u get past act 1. the worst part about D2 is the skill system itself. there is no real way to know what is effective and what isnt. there are not enough points available to dump into enough skills to make a character well rounded and useful. example: a sorceress has to concentrate all her points into one tree to be effective and survive enough to get to hell diff. but once there 1/3 of all monsters are immune to her particular skill(s). each class has this to a certain extent. the amazon to be effective has to focus almost entirely on either one specific set of bow skills or javelin skills and has not tho space to equip items for resistance. the barbarian has to forgoe the enticing warcries tree if he wants to be able to kill anything in nitemare. same with the other classes. it isnt until they reach 80+ in level can they begin to use the lesser skills and by then they can pretty much walk around naked using unarmed combat to kill things that would be affected by the skills they passed up. so whats the point of having three trees?? 1-4 points in a wider range than 3-4 main skills is useless in anything past act1. while all the skills are useful in normal act1 once a player leaves that area they soon discover that it is time to wipe the character and start over. this happens again once they get to nitemare and yet again in hell diff. so by the time the player figures out that what needs to happen is specialization in only 3-4 skills and what those skills are she/he has liekly made 4-5 characters and played thru the game numerous times from scratch only to end up with a cookie cutter character that is like 75% of the other characters on bnet differentiated only by how many SOJ they have in their stash.
while D2 has a very diverse set of items but 99 out of100 uselessand have little to no effect on gameplay except in normal difficulty. the difference between a perfect 3 gem bow and a regular bow are almost nill. the inability to for a character other than a valkyrie heavy amazon to exist without a shield in hell diff is nill. players should be able to re-assign skill points as they see fit at the begining of an act. this would enable people to enjoy the game much more and make the seldom used skills useful since they can only be used in very small parts of any given act and are only useful at high levels.

Well I don't usually run into a lotta bugs or the like, which is really lucky, considering my computer is about a year and a half old. I'm on 56K so lag goes quadruple-time for me in this game... there's nearly a full second delay between my mouse clicks and the actual response. And half the time I whirl through a crowd of monsters only to discover that they weren't actually there... kinda like how you look at the stars and they're simply images of something in space a few million years ago...
My main gripe about the game is that they KEEP PATCHING AND CHANGING IT. The most controversial and game-breaking patches, 1.03 and 1.08, completely screwed about half the D2 population over (or more). Anyone using a CE Necro got screwed in the 1.03 patch. Barbs were weakened, but they were definitely still playable and probably the easiest class to work with. But after 1.08, any class that does physical damage has completely lost all power. I'm not sure how you're doing with that Ama, JANNA, but from talking to my friends, who all only use Sorc's now, the Sorceress is the only class that can do any kind of real damage (Stat Field, Fire Wall, etc.).
I mean sure, hell difficulty feels like hell difficulty now. But what's the point of making a difficulty completely UNPLAYABLE?

actually what was really surprising is that while i was doing act4 hell diff with a decent bow that had some mods to damage i found the goldstrike unique bow which really pumps up the physical damage and socketed a shael rune in it. with that physical immunes with that bow and a few charms taht add some sort of elemental damage i was able to toss my 3 gem fire bow and 3 gem lightning bow and stick with that one bow and use level 1 ?frozen? arrow the level 30 skill. physical immunes are not much of a threat. in fact nothing but extremely large packs of range attack critters are any threat to me in hell diff. even stranger when i pop into 8 player hell diff mode with my valkyrie her life goes thru the roof the same as the monsters. while it takes me a bit longer to kill em they still go down relatively fast. the valkyrie is so good at distracting things at that level in hell diff i stopped bothering with resing the mervenary altogether. in fact i thought i was going to be in for it when i went to take on the ancients in hell diff and baals minions but i had to only recast my valk 3 times with the ancients and 2 times with baalls minions even tho lister was immune to physical fire and poison.
when i get my cable modem i may re-make JANNA on a realm and play there if i can find me a goldstrike bow and those nifty riprap boots, and venom belt. least i know now what works in hell diff. unmodified level 16 critical strike level 16 pierce high as u can go on valkyrie (currently level 13 unmodified) level 20 guided arrow and 1 into strafe for doing normal hell diff runs for cash and baal runs altho im leaning to not having any in strafe since guilded and valkyrie work so well. and 1 point in freezing arrow for the physical immunes and creatures that can get res'd, after i get level 20 valk i will finish off critical strike and pierce even tho they have diminishing returns after that i will dump points into the fire tree. and top out at 175 strength with 10 points into life and mana the rest into dex. i figure leveling on the realms will be a lot faster than solo play and i should be able to get a few better items than i have now except so far i havent seen any bow better than this goldstrike ive got, it wades thru hell diff critters like they werent there.
but u gotta get ur barbarian to hit 2000+ to have a chance of wacking things in hell diff. even then he is going to get stomped without very high resist and really high armour.

I think the only reason I been playing it lately is as a filler until something really good comes along. You pretty much summed it up about how I feel about the game Janna. In D1, I liked the game enough to get 2 characters to level 50. This game there's no way I could stand to play it that long.
The simplicity of Diablo was its biggest asset. Mainly because you could "just play" and it was a challenge enough in higher difficulties yet not unplayable. I think the Diablo 2 skills could have worked out great. But why 3 trees? And half the skills are useless. The ones that are good that people invest in, Blizzard just ends up nerfing them. They should have one skill tree per class. One side dealing with offensive skills, and the other defensive skills. I don't think people care if all Amazons or other characters are more alike than different. Hell there's 7 character classses now. That's plenty of diversity.
I'm pretty sure once something like Neverwinter Nights, or maybe a Diablolike 1st or 3rd person 3D type game comes out, Diablo 2 will go straight into the trashcan here.

Well I started a Druid a week ago and leveled him to 3. Guess what level he is now? 
You're right, he's still level 3.
Single player seems to be a bit more tempting than Bnet right now because there's none of that ultra-high-level people crap, and maybe I'll even be able to play with some OTS people who have open chars (JANNA, RS, who else?)
But everytime I think that I'll start getting into the game and actually enjoying it again, I remember that there's really nothing about the game to enjoy anymore.

And I still think that Blizz should have implemented a feature to export characters from Closed to Open. I mean, since they don't really care about Open Bnet and hacks, etc., why don't they just allow for that? Even though I don't play my closed characters anymore, I'd still like to have a hard copy of those characters on my computer so all my hours on them wouldn't have completely gone to waste.
Did I mention that my 63 sorc also got screwed by the patch? She was a FO/Static sorc until Blizz decided that FO would have a 2-orb cast limit. Now she's in the trash, and my friend took her 48% Tarnhelm.

I know someone who uses FO as his main attack and he uses guardian and nova only when they are immune to ice. he still kills everything on hell diff

What are you guys talking about? Sorceress are very playable in D2:LoD. If you need help just check out www.d2source.com. That site is the most in-depth guide on Diablo II, and it is more in-depth than any other guides I've read too. It is newbie-friendly too, anyone can understand it. Also if you are having a problem you can just email him and he'll respond just as fast as anyone here responds to my computer problems.
Amazons are playabe too, at least javazons - they are the best mass killers and tankers. If you need help just go to www.theamazonbasin.com and there a few guides on LoD Amazons. You can check out the forums there to ask question and read posts.
If you need help in D2 you can post here and ask me and I might be able to answer it because i haven't played that game in awhile.

I just play D2 for the hell of it. I don't try to think about it too much, and I fail to see the point of leveling past 70 or so. Around 50 I get bored and try another character build. But then again, I usually start new characters again when new patches come out (which is pretty often). Right now I'm working on a duel-sword whirlwinding barb, frozen orb/chain lightning sorc, zeal/fanat/veng/conv/whatever pally, and my newest, a lightning fury/guided arrow amazon.
Well, maybe I do think about the game a little too much..

I didn't take the time to read the entire thread (aka debate about complaints), but I will say that my barb has no problem hitting monsters in Act5 Hell. I'm a Sword Frenzy Barb (lvl 27 frenzy, hence mucho AR bonuses), and both my swords deal over 1000 damage per hit with frenzy bonuses. Also, I leech about 19% mana abd 14% life. Even in 1.09 my barb (lvl 69) is owning in Hell Act 5. I also have decent resistances in hell. Fire is maxed, the lightning is the next highest in the mid 50% range, and the other 2 range from mid 40% to mid 30% (don't remember exactly).
Why am I not having problems hitting monsters? I didn't waste my skill points on Whirlwind. Whirlwind has the potential to do a lot more damage than frenzy, but it has no other bonuses. For all the more damage you do with whirlwind, my frenzy is making 5 times more successful hit and having much higher net damage (which also helps my leech). Physical immune? No problem. My berserk, and much less than half the skill level of my frenzy, deals more magic damage than ym frenzy does in physical damage. And because I have sufficient leech to keep me alive without too many potions, I've started carrying mana potions and full rejuvs to power the Berserk.
Anyway. Are you finished clawing your eyes out having read this run down of my barb? Good. See a doctor about that.

im about to get level 35 on the realms for my new amazon and just starting hell diff in nitemare. i intend on doing the butcher in hell solo so i can be sure of getting my reward without some loon snagging my potential zod rune heh. then ill join up with a group and go smack D down. i hate to say it but blizz is doing a lot better with realm play cant wait to get my cable modem and try my amazon out then. so far my bow is still a POS but im nearly level 20 guilded arrow heh. found m'avenas belt last nite and its burning a hole in my stash. i have had a lot of fun joining random games and playing with folk so far. maybe in a few months blizz will do better

yeah, i agree with a lot of what is said
some of the skill changes made to people who have existing characters just isnt fair
you play up to like lv90 or whatever and then they alter your two best skills - maybe they arent the best anymore? but maybe they arent completely useles
the point is they are no longer what they were when you put the points into them...so the option you're left with is recreating your character - thats just not fair
i think you should just log on and find that altered skills have had their skill points reduced to 1 - you can put them back if you want, or you can place them elsewhere
or even if they would put in the option of a cube recipe to reallocate points...its just simply not fair to force people to recreate
and as for hell difficulty
even with max lightning resist and 900hp i get killed by two hits from a lightning enchanted monster - wtf is that about? thats not fun at all, thats just retarded - nightmare is almost as bad..
then give them stone skin and phy immune and whats the point? i just walk away
i play an assassin and i dont really understand how my shadow master can have -20 lightning resist and go toe to toe with lightning enchanted monsters for long durations and yet if i get hit far away its devastating
and as for people having problems hitting monsters...
i had the same problem too - it was extremely annoying and made me say "wtf" a lot
but i started using weapons with the "fools" prefix and its made a significant improvement on my to hit percent
fools is character level based attack rating and damage
i get over 1000 ar from just my weapon - then it gets hit with multipliers from skill and other things and my ar is over 6k - atma is same class as me and his ar is like 12k with phoenix strike (i dont use that skill..)
i have a fools claw of eviscerations which addes two different modifiers to max dmg...so i get around +70 max dmg on my weapon which is really good for a claw which usually have very low dmg
perhaps try a fools weapon for a while as a solution to your "to hit" percent problems
anya in act5 tends to sell them a lot on the 3rd tab (weapons) -
and for some reason
i get all my weapons and armors off the vendor
cause apparently the expansion made all the drops completely useless - i have yet to see a single rare ring or amulet drop - it makes no sense ... i have never played a character beyond lv30 or even on nightmare until after the expansion
and yet i would find a significant number of rare amulets/rings
and now...with the release of the expansion and playing all the way to hell difficulty i see the true reward of the extra levels and difficulty levels...none
im running into hell with like 104 defense because the best things i have found so far were when i was level 10 and im level 70 now - its just rediculous
the only way to upgrade apparently is thru the vendors, but they dont sell rares with multiple resists...
atma and i play over tcp/ip because the realms are pretty shitty
if any of you were considering just doing open games there are ppl who do that :P

i have a level 69 amazon in open but tcpip is unplayable with my crappy dialup so ive moved to the realms. i dont bother with resist since i find it useless there is no diff that i could see between max resist in hell diff and -70 so i dont bother with it and instead focus on speed improving items and distractors to get in and kill a few and get out to regroup. went from 35 to 50 last nite. i killed the ancients in nitemare on the realms at level 44 solo. still got a crappy bow *sigh* but a few more levels and i will start having a chance for a goldstrike bow to drop then i will start doing mephisto runs in nitemare to get one. cant wait to play tonite heh
