PC Guy here TRYING to connect a Mac to the Internet

Hey I am trying to connect an imac with mac OS 8.5.1 to the internet using ethernet. The computer has an ethernet adaptor installed. The ethernet is coming through my cable internet's modem, then a router. I have tried to configure the TCP/IP and the AppleTalk, but to no avail. The weird thing is that it says that I am receiving an IP address. So I have no idea what to do. Another thing is that the router is also sending ethernet to a PC, though I do not believe this should be any sort of a problem.

Thank you in advance for any help and advice.

I'm not Mac specialist but belive that it cannot be that much different from PC (with Windows or Linux).
