So, being a computer guru of sorts I often get to help family members. My mother in law has always been the worst of these people, and there is no way anyone can argue this after this story. My mother-in-law has gone from crappy Windows 95 systems, to Mac G3 systems, and back again.. Right about the MAC G3 timeframe I laid down the law that I will no longer and never support her problems anymore. So she has stopped asking me for help.. Yippie. However, she now tries to find support through support lines and through my wife.. And my wife is always telling me about her latest computer problems. After reading these, I think you'll understand why I decided to never support her computer problems again.. (without the reason that I just don't like her in the first place, ca-cera)
Problem 1, which was probably 6-12 months ago. She had justed bought the G3.. And was using the mouse and it wasn't working too well.. She had to rock it back and forth for clicking, and the trackball was too small. She wanted to know where her other button was and that was the only complaint. She found out via Tech Support that she was indeed using the mouse upside down.
Problem 2: yesterday or today, whatever.. She is now on an XP system of some sort, probably an e-machine or something. She bought a webcam from Walmart and followed the instructions on installation. The resolution was horrible... Not sure what was so wrong with it myself, I don't care (see above for disclaimer on that if you've forgotten already). So she decides, "well, this is not good, I'll uninstall and take it back for a refund". So she proceeds to "remove the software" from her system. I don't know how she was performing this "removal", but then again I don't care. Anyways, somewhere along this process she ended up getting her video to flip upside down. She rebooted, several times, she said.. No help. Everytime it was upside down. So she calls, of all places, AT&T (her ISP) and explains the problem to the support guy. The support guy says "that's a problem we can't help with, your internet connection is fine" so she asks "would it be okay if I just flip my monitor over and use it that way?" She is put on hold for a second and when the guy comes back on the phone he's all "um, no, I don't think doing that is a good idea." so she is a quick rebounder "your not going to tell anyone I said that are you?" and support guy said "um, too late for that, I already sent this one to my entire department" and she was like, "oh, okay then - thanks" and gets off the phone. Oh, you so think the story is over, don't you! Silly you. So she flips her monitor over. Works great she says, except there is no base so the monitor is all tilted funny. But she doesn't understand now why the mouse works backwards. She has to concentrate on moving the mouse the opposite direction to do what she needs it to do. So she calls my wife, and my wife was like hold on, and then she called me and I laugh. My recommendation? "tell her to flip the mouse over and call tech support back." lol Well, I didn't say that, but I thought about it. Enjoy that one if your gut doesn't hurt from the laughter. Um.. Yes.. She is still *using* her computer with the monitor flipped over and the mouse 'backward'. She wrote my wife an email just a few minutes ago...
