DirectX 9.0c compatibility problem

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Saoirse

Hi there,

I bought The Sims 2 yesterday, installed ok, DirectX 9.0c was installed from the disk.

When I start the game, I get an error saying “Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate.”

I have a Chaintech GeForce 4 MX 440-8X, and it is DirectX 9.0 compatible (9.0 came with the card)
I went on to the nVidia website and looked up drivers for 9.0c for Win ME but there don’t seem to be any. Should I just download the newest one? e.g. one that was released after 9.0c was? A driver for 9.0 was on the disk that came with the card.

I’m a total computer novice, I know quite a bit about software and stuff but nothing about hardware and drivers etc. I’m only 14 – is that a valid excuse?

Anyway, thanks for any help you can give,

Saoirse

Could you let me know if you managed to fix it and how

Thanks

Lorna

Don't worry about your "Chaintech GeForce 4 MX 440-8X" being DirectX 9.0c compatible since it's an older card and cannot take advantage of the new capabilities.
From what I read at the NVidia site the "GeForce 4 MX" was originally designed for DirectX 8.1.
Any card designed for DirectX 7 and up will be compatible with DirectX 9 from what I have read in forums.

As for a solution to your problem check this thread:
http://www.opentechsupport.net/foru...ead.php?t=18858

I would try installing an older driver.
What I would try first is un-install the NVidia video drivers, reboot and then go to 'Windows Update' and let it install it's recommended driver. If that doesn't work then try an older driver from the NVidia archive like the 40.71 drivers from the thread above.

Thanks soooo much - I will try that when I'm more awake and more mentally alert :-P

Hope you get your problem fixed too, Lorna.

Peace out!

EDIT: Have done, it and it works! Thank you thank you thank you!

My problem now is that my monitor is the wrong size - it's 800x600 and the game plays in 1024x768. So it plays in a 3-inch strip across the middle of the screen where everything is all squashed up. And I can't change it in the display panel either, it just does the same thing.

Here's to a TFT for Christmas :-D

Though it would have been nice if they'd told me that on the specs, as the old Sims had the option of 800x600 and 1024x768. I will ask the online tech support - see if they can help me (as I'm having withdrawal symptoms now because I haven't simmed in so long!)

Thanks sooooo much!

xxx

EDIT EDIT: Lovely reply from tech support...

"The problem are experiencing maybe a result of the software running the graphics device on your computer. You can download an update from the following website which should resolve the problem:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/win9x_61.76"

AAAAARRRRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have this horrible feeling that this is all going to come round and hit me again......

Hey Saoirse
Tired it myself and no joy wondering do I have to buy a new pc I'm having no joy whatsoever tried downloading from www.nvida.com to get a graphics card didnt work, emailed microsoft they were so good to not bother replying and as for EA support great help they are but ingnoring ya !!

tell me your ways Saoirse PLEASE !! beginning to despise the sims at this stage

Posted by: Lorna

sorry gmackey tired what you said and it didnt work for me .... come to conclusion that its never gonna work thinking of just returning it thanks for your help though

Posted by: gmackay1

Well, if your problem is similar to Saoirse, which after running DXDIAG you get errors such as:

·Direct3D 7 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x80004005 (Generic failure)
·Direct3D 8 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)
·Direct3D 9 test results: Failure at step 8 (Creating 3D Device): HRESULT = 0x8876086c (error code)

then I would guess your problems will crop up with any program that uses DirectX since it isn't working properly for some reason.
If DXDIAG gives you errors as above I would say there is some corruption or compatibility problem somewhere.

Unless you can find a direct answer to this specific problem your best bet would be to find someone with some technical experience that can troubleshoot on-site.

If I was experiencing this problem I would re-format, re-install everything from scratch and try to get the DXDIAG problem fixed. But of course this is a big job that you would probably want to avoid if possible.

Hope you get things working.

Greg

All I did was go to www.nvidia.com and download version 4.71 of the Win 9x driver. Then I uninstalled the first driver and installed 40.71.

This made the game work, but it still plays in the wrong resolution. Hrmph.

If you really want to install it this is how you must do.But you must have installer for direcx9.0b and directx9.0c.
first step
extract the directx 9.0b in one folder
second step
extract the directx 9.0c into the other folder
third step
notice all the *.cab file in the directx 9.0c folder
forth step
copy all the *.cab file from directx9.0c and replaced it in the folder for directx9.0b
final step
install the intaller in directx 9.0b
and walla, you with have directx9.0c already install in your computer

this will definitely install directx 9.0c and fully workble without any error

Well, the saga has ended for me too, but tis a happy ending.

[Nasty Person] from the tech support told me all this nonsense I should do to set my graphics card for better acceleration and stuff. Then he said

"Alternativley you could open the game, go to options and set the game to run in 800x600"

Which was jolly helpful, considering he could have told me that in the first place.

And my friend kindly donated a very old monitor that is high res, so I have that as well now.

Hope all your computer worries are magicked away,

Peace out,

Saoirse

I am having the same problem. When I start the game, I also get an error saying “Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate.”

I don't know what a Chaintech GeForce 4 MX 440-8X is either that everyone is talking about. how do i fix this problem?

Posted by: Saoirse

Before we can help you we need to know some things about your computer, so you need to do this:

Click Start, then Run.

Type "dxdiag" (no quotes) in the box, click run.

In the box that comes up, click Save All Information. Save it somewhere you know where it is (I never remember where I save stuff!)

Then open up your word processor and open the file, it'll be called dxdiag or dxreport (unless you gave it another name).

Copy the sections titled "System Information" and "Display Devices" into a reply to this topic.

This will solve the problem of not knowing what a GeForce 4 MX yada yada is - it's a type of graphics card, but we have to know if you have the same one, otherwise we won't give you the right advice, and we don't want that!

Hear from you soon,

Saoirse

Video card: Intel(R) 82810 Graphics Controller
Video card: S3 Graphics ProSavageDDR

These are integrated video controllers. They are very low end and I doubt they will work properly with modern games. I can't even find specifications on these controllers on Google.
I'm not suprised your having problems. You may have to buy yourself a more modern video card and disable the integrated video controller.

You can try running the video at the lowest resolution (640 x 480) and running DXDIAG to see if it passes the tests. Make sure you have the latest drivers.

Hi Tink,

Do you get the same error message as we displayed above, saying that the program can't find any compatible graphics adapters?

Your driver version is quite old, this site : http://ranger.s3graphics.com/swlib/420drv/ has drivers for your card. I think the top link there has the most recent driver version for your system. You should be able to download it for free.

However, my problem was solved by downloading an older driver rather than a new one, but I think that was just a Weird Thing with my computer. My computer has lots of Weird Things.

Your DxDiag report said “Display Tab 1: Hardware-accelerated Direct3D 9 is not available because the display driver does not support it. You may be able to get a newer driver from the hardware manufacturer.” So I think you should be ok with a new driver from the above site.

Onlireasonusmil, It says on the Intel site under “Compatible Games List” that The Sims 2 can be run by doing the following:

Symptoms:
The Sims* 2 game will not run.
Error: "Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this system! Please make sure you have a DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided by the manufacturer. The application will now terminate."

Solution:
The following steps can be used to eliminate or minimize the issue(s) reported with the game:

1. Set the display to 16-bit color. To make this change, follow these steps:

a. Click on the Start menu and select Settings, Control Panel, and then double-click on Display. If using Microsoft Windows* XP: Click on the Start menu and select Control Panel, "Switch to Classic View" if the category view is shown, and then double-click on Display.

b. Select the Settings tab.

c. Change the Color Quality (Color Depth) to 16-bit color.

2. Run the game with the -w switch which forces the game to run in a window. To add this switch, follow these steps:

a. Right-click on the The Sims 2 game and left-click on Properties. You can do this either on the game's shortcut on the desktop or on the game's entry in the Start menu.

b. Add a space and -w to the end of the Target field, so that it looks like this:

Note: The actual path may vary depending on where the game was installed. Make sure that the -w goes outside the quotation marks and that there is a space between the last quotation mark and the -w.

c. Click OK.

I’m not sure how well that will work, if at all. If it doesn’t, get a new driver from this site: http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=22&strTypes=DRV%2CARC&ProductID=798&OSFullName=Windows*+Me&submit=Go%21 It has drivers for your card, the top download is the newest one.

Hope everything goes well for you both,

Saoirse
