LAN settings question

Hi all,

yeah so here's my question. My friend just bought a new Laptop and wants me to install a few things. However i cannot connect to the University network from her laptop. I checked my LAN properties and i have a tab that says "Authentication". For some reason she does not have this tab in her LAN settings. Is there a particular reason why this is so?

the only two clues she could give me were these;

1) Our college now has a new policy about going on the net. We have to go to the I-Lab to do some thing or the other in order to be able to get on the 'net.

2) When she was installing Win XP, she chose "cable" as her connection instead of LAN. Could this be a cause?

One more thing...she just got a new Wireless card and it is being detected but we both have no idea how to use it to get on the web or how it is supposed to work.

Please help!!!!!!!!

Have you tried to consult your Uni's IT dept? Maybe you need to Assign Proxy and Ports to the computer.
This happends to my college, My WiFi and Lan require to config the setting. This is due to the Virtual Server being used.

Contol Panel-> Internet Options-> Connections(I think) ->There will be a button called (LAN settings). I think. Then you type the Proxy and Ports.

I am not sure your uni will use what settings, my college is Proxy=> Proxy Ports=> 8080

If my setting dun works, you better consult ur it dept. It can be hardware compatibility issue.
