I want to make it so that when an image file hyperlink is clicked on, in a specific subdirectory, instead of loading the image as usual, with the system/ browser color settings, it loads a template html file that displays the image there-in, without having to make an html file for every individual image.
Or better yet, if it's possible, a way to change the background color and positioning of the image when it's defaultly loaded.

you want image-only "pages" to load with a non-default positioning and color?
photoshop has a template thumbnail html genretaor you might be able to cannibilize that does something similar. it probably uses html for every image though. but it will generate it, negating the initial effort
css stylesheets might aliviate some of the repetative html coding

I'm talking about at least five hundred images. Even if I used SSI, hell, even if I could click a button and automagically generate them all with no work whatsoever, I'd still be looking at a lot of unwanted and uneccesary html documents.
