im finding this pic all over the web.
does this have any basis in fact?

That image is all over the web without anyone pointing out which one is him? I wouldn't worry about it much.

So a bunch of soldiers got drunk and made a parody... big deal.

as kerry is well known for being a war protester after he returned from vietnam, i dont see why that picture is remotely interesting.

upon more research it seems it is a picture from the cover of a book by john kerry. also clarification is saying that that the upside down flag means distress, not disgracing.

an upside down flag is the international signal for distress
"The son of Eddie Rickenbacker, the great World War I ace, William F. Rickenbacker, said in response the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize flag burning, “I’m flying my flag at full mast, but upside down, in the international signal of distress. A flag that has been abandoned by its own country is certainly in distress, and I intend to fly mine upside down until the Court turns right side up”."

Some guy got arrested way back like 2 years ago for flying his U.S. Flag upside down. Apparently some people took(take) it as protest.

it's a picture being spread by someone who professes ignorance calling upon the support of other ignorant people - which is a lot

The guy got arrested? wow... Ive heard that if an american flag touches the ground that it must be burned by law. How ironic.
Posted by: redwench
eh, he had to have been doing something else to get arrested. there is no law about anything to do with the flag, other than safety issues.

aye, red, that is correct. if i remember correctly, the flag only prohibited from being burned or in other ways "disgraced" if it is in an attempt to cause a commotion. as to the flag having to be burned if it ever touches the ground, that is dictated by etiquette (though it is not widely taught outside of the military and followed by even fewer) not law. it's rather like removing your cap during the playing of the national anthem

People started complaining to the police, and the police ignored it until a patrol man saw it and took it as some anti-american thing, and took him to precinct. All charges were dropped, if I recall, because he began threatening to sue...
Posted by: Ocean
are the police allowed to intervene if its something along the lines of inciting violence?
Posted by: redwench
of course.

Though there are some strange laws about flags still on the books in local counties and townships across the states. Some date back about 100 years most are from the 50's. Such as you could get fined for leaving your flag outside without a light on it or you can't march in a parade carrying a red flag. I wouldn't imagine any being enforced and if it was the aclu would pick up your case win it easily.
