Whenever CS is in the menu is constantly degausses my monitor, but it isn't my 640x480 res mode because windows doesn't do that. WTF! I can't even try to get into a game because I can't see anything while this happens, and it's not good to do it that often. Anybody know?

OMFG, this is gonna need to be moved somewhere else. Now my computer does this all throughout the boot sequence and in the BIOS. I found this out because my computer froze in CS menu, I had played the tutorial mdoe for 3 minutes with no problem and was attempting to exit, when the light on monitor just turned yellow and stayed, never seen it do that before, and ctrl-alt-delete wasn't working. I press the reset button on comp, it boots into BIOS and says that it's using factory defaults because of an invalid external CPU clock, so I set it back to my processor speed. It keeps blinking on and off every time the screen changes and deguasses every time, as if it was turned on and off. Yet it's fine in windows 1280x1024. Something ain't right here, is my video card smoked? This only seems to happen in 640x480 (CS Menus) and 320x240 (DOS and BIOS resolution I think). <Insert string of words here that I won't even bother typing for it would be 5 pages long>

OK, it's gotta be my video card overheating or something, because now windows is doing it too! Just chatting in ots on topaz did it. This sucks, it's not even as hot as it was a week ago, I'm gonna try having a fan blow on the inside of my case.

It's not degaussing. Your horizontal or vertical sync is screwing up.
I press the reset button on comp, it boots into BIOS and says that it's using factory defaults because of an invalid external CPU clock, so I set it back to my processor speed.
BIOS on the video card or motherboard? Processor speed on the video card or the motherboard?
It sounds like your motherboard. Go into the BIOS and select all defaults if they support your CPU speed. If it keeps up, post your system specs.

The CPU settings were messed up, the FSB was at 100 instead of 133. It's a safety feature of the motherboard to reset the FSB back to 133 when it gets a bad command.
I'm pretty sure that it was degaussing most of the time because my monitor hummed and the screen did the same thing as it normally would. But other times it might have been the sync, though if it were my monitor should display a warning about it, which it's done before when my vid card overheated. "Sync out of range"
I'm gonna set the CPU in BIOS again, because computer died again, and wait till tomorrow after some D2 and CS and quake2.

This is not good, something is dead. I tried rebooting my computer to get into bIOS, but it just didn't display anything, the light was constant yellow, which means standby according to the manual, "horizontal sync inactive and screen blanked". It was still in that mode when window finished booting, and I had to turn off the monitor then on again to get my video back. I'm not liking this one bit.

Swilo,
If its your monitors fault:
Through away the monitor and buy a nice 19" Flatscreen (Not flatmonitor, flatscreen) NEC Multisync
If its your video cards fault:
Through away that Voodoo 3 and buy a Geforce 3 or a Geforce 2 Ultra, after all, it sounds like you've got a beefy system, but a small video card.
Just some suggestions.

OK, I just tried playing Q2 in 800x600. After about 5 minutes the monitor reset, it blinked yellow, then turned back on and degaussed, as if it went to standby and came back. Then about 2 minutes after that it did an old TV trick. The monitor flickered into a white vertical bar, then flickered into a V shape, and condensed into a white dot in the middle and went off with a solid yellow message LED. Turning the monitor off and then on again fixed this. My sync is gone on the video card during heavy loads, no 3d games for me until I can fix/replace it. :*(

This is a nice Samsung natural flat 19" monitor, model 900NF.
And if I have to replace the vid card, it will probably be a GTS or pro, because I have no money to spare and no job yet.

To save time <ISOCH>.
My monitor is screwed upside down and inside out. Now it won't display jack sh!t, just a box bouncing around saying "Sync out of range" with some garbled text, even the box isn't straight and it goes off screen. I tried it on my friends known working computer and it had the same error. The manual says if you turn it on with the cable disconnected a box should appear saying "No signal.", but that box didn't show, so it's 100% monitor. Now I have to try and convince Samsung to honor their warranty and replace my monitor. One year on-site service, they better deliver.
I'm gonna plug my friend's monitor into my computer to make sure the vid card didn't go down and take the monitor with it, or the other way around.
Needless to say, I won't be on often the next week or 5.

I'm glad you got it isolated. Good luck and hurry back.

=/
nateron works too much to play q2 every night and kull would rather play rune (which if it's just me and him I do too), so hurry the hell back so I can play my daily q2.
YOU KNOW YOU MISS THE RAIL!

I'm still wondering why this hasn't been moved by anybody to a more suitable forum...
*Spits over the rail* I want my mighty boot!

Best thing about d3d?
using the mighty boot and the Quick kick at the same time, running around full speed and even jumping.
Posted by: Bishop
what we used to lovingly refer to as the bicycle kick
Posted by: Swilo
I fprget how to do the quick kick, but I do remember having 2 boots on screen at once.

An appology to 3DFX, it isn't the video card at all. Nick's monitor worked fine on my machine.
Now to call Samsung and have them honor their one year on site warranty. It's only a month old so they WILL get their butt over here to replace it. It's a matter of calling their 800 number and waiting a day, maybe 2.
I should be back spoon.

an apology to 3dfx?
someone censor that, quick!

Samsung tech was open. I told te guy what was wrong, he didn't quite understand what I meant by "garbled text in the error window and a crooked screen." I explained, then he asked me to turn it on with no video connected, I told him it did nothing and he was completely baffled, didn't know what to do. For 30 seconds or so he sat there saying "uhh, umm" until I said I need a replacement, at which point he gave me the number for nearest service centre, who of course is NOT open sundays. They WILL send someone out, covered by my warranty, and he'll screw with it for 2 hours, then leave mumbling. Come back the next day with a replacement and yell at me for 3 hours on what not to do to it. Then I'll slap him upside the head and ignore him as if he wasn't there, contentedly playing Q2, CS, and D2. This better be hassleless.

Keep it simple when talking to them.
"My monitor is broken. I plugged my monitor into another computer and it doesnt' work on it either. The other computer's monitor works fine on my computer. I need you to replace it, please."
Anything else is just confusion to them.

I learn better through experience. Next time I'll just assume they know nothing, because they probably don't.
So far as I can tell, the signal decoder is fried, that's why it always thinks the sync is out of range, and this in turn nulls the usefullness of the display mechanism, as it doesn't know what to do with the crippled signal. Imagine if I told the guy THAT.
