My DVD player will not play DVD's created by computers. Do I need a new player? If so what specfic DVD format(s) must it be able to read?

It is possible, depending on how old it is. It depends on the DVD burner. The formats are: -R and -RW, +R and +RW. There is also a DVD-RAM format althought it is not widely used.
