subject: Find Target of Shortcuts
I am running Win98 SE on a single user Compaq desktop PIII. Being intensely curious about the inner workings of computers, many technical questions arise as I explore my own system. Where are the best online sources for answers to computing questions?
Here is an example:
I am trying to determine what processes come into action when I right click on a SHORTCUT icon, choose "Properties", then click on the "Find Target" button? When I do this, why does Windows Explorer open with the ROOT DRIVE expanded, but progress no farther toward the target folder? Can this occur because the drive holds a huge number of files? What else might cause this - a corrupted or wrong version DLL?

because the target doesnt exist anymore in the root drive, and it expects you to find it manually.

Ahh heres where some computer experiance comes in handy your thinking 'find target' as in "show me where you are running this shortcut from" but its saying 'find target' as in "show me a new program this should be a shortcut to" Its been a while since ive used 98, but there should be a target line that shows you the program the shortcut opens.
