memory manufacturers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Is it all the same? The price range for memory is huge. I need some pc3200, is there a brand I should stay away from? What is recommended for an asus board with an athlon xp processor?

Posted by: zorg

Depending on if your planning on overclocking, general usage, gaming usage etc, you can look at different brands. If you aer just planning on using it as is for something like gaming, Crucial is a good bet, even samsung is ok, and Kingston has been advised. I would go with Corsair though a bit more expensive, but the Value range is still good value for money and they hav a lifetime warrantee ( I believe)

Posted by: LazyLarry

yeah its for gaming

Posted by: LazyLarry

another q. Would 1gig of pc2700 be better than 768mb of pc3200?

Posted by: zorg

1 gig would be fine if your not planning on overclockign and stuff, but I have to add, make sure that the price difference isnt small. Last i checked the price difference was not huge, in some cases the same for the 2. I would prolly say go for 1 gig Corsair value ram 3200.
Check to see what the price for that is.

What about Ultra?

Posted by: Bix VT

Good brands of ram are Kingston, Mushkin, and Corsair.

If you plan on overclocking and/or tweaking, get the high performance line of these brands.

If not, then just get the value line.

And PC3200 would probably be your best bet unless you plan on overclocking.

Posted by: LazyLarry

Dont plan on overclocking.

Posted by: Bix VT

Then yeah, just stick to the value lines, they should work fine for you.

Posted by: LazyLarry

any particular value line? Ultra has rebates, even though the original price is the same as the top names.

if you feel the need to deviate from those brands, make sure the board is compatable with it. if you ever add more ram in the future, youll need to purchase the identical dimm [except for size] if you want to be sure of compatability.

Posted by: Bix VT

make sure you check www.newegg.com and www.zipzoomfly.com for the best deals.

Posted by: LazyLarry

Think ill get corsair. Thanks.

Posted by: LazyLarry

wait a sec, your saying that if I get one of the big 3, i don't have to worry about compatability with my board or with different size as long as i get the same brand?

Posted by: Bix VT

you could run a stick of 256, 512, and a stick of 1gb all in the same board if they are those brands, guarenteed.

Posted by: LazyLarry

And thats regardless of the board type? I looked up the K8v on the asus site and it recomends the kingston but the corsair is 10 bucks cheaper?

Posted by: redwench

not just the same brand, it has to be the same model, aside from the size.

if you find a board that kingston wont work on, i will eat a cat.

The Kingston HyperX series of RAM didn't work on the Abit NF7 series motherboards for a while. There was a problem properly recognizing the SPD speeds. It was actually the motherboard's fault and was corrected in a BIOS flash, but the point is, you have your end of the bargain to hold up.

Posted by: redwench

i didnt say hyperx. i said kingston. next youll be telling me that because a rimm wont work in a nforce board, its fried feline time.

Posted by: taco_fox

HyperX is Kingston's performance line, just like ValueRAM is the value line. http://home.houston.rr.com/tacofox/wtfsmily.gif

Posted by: redwench

i am aware of that. kingston also makes rimms. wanna try those on that board too?

Posted by: taco_fox

I'm not following your logic here

Posted by: redwench

no doubt.

Posted by: LazyLarry

Well, I went with a kingston 512 stick since that's what is recomended by asus. thanks for the help.

Posted by: loxus

there are 2 different brand on my board..
one 256MB PC2700 Apacer
one 256MB PC2700 AM1

yeah i know they cheezy mem...

it work just fine..

basicaly try to install same brand to avoid any compatibilityti arrgh how do you spell compatibility???

Posted by: Bix VT

hit the spell check button

btw red...I think taco has a valid point. HyperX is kingston. It would be like saying "If you can find a person that can't wear levis then I will eat a cat"

"I can't fit into 560s"

"I said levis, not 560s."

...

Posted by: redwench

and that would be correct. not every "model" of jeans will fit everybody, which is why levi makes different ones. got huge thighs, you go for a relaxed fit, not a slim fit; you dont say you cant wear levis if you cant squeeze into the slim do you?

Posted by: Bix VT

well then I guess you should have said "if you find a board that kingston valueram wont work on, that supports 184 pin DIMMs, i will eat a cat."

Posted by: redwench

roffle

The masses have been appeased.

i have kingston value ram 2x512 pc 3200 on an asus a7n8x delux mobo CAS 2.5 (like $5 more than cas 3 versions). works great, though it wont overclock at all.

cas 2 is better than cas 2.5
pc 3500 is better than pc3200 if you are overclocking
dual channel configuration is a must have if you are at all concerned with bang for buck, so buy 2 smaller sticks as opposed to one big one.

if your mobo supports 200mhz bus speed than you can increase that speed and drop your cpu multiplyer down do get almost the same speed. thats a potential benefit with 3200 ram vs 2700

example on my system with a net cpu overclock of about 6% and nothing else overclocked. vs everything being stock for the cpu, a significant gain on my 3dmark scores:

And there you have a VERY good example of how increasing your fsb really makes a huge difference in performance.
