External USB Sound Cards

Hi all, I've been having some trouble with the sound card on my laptop (sent it back twice, but nothing they do fixes it). I'm was almost at the point of giving up, but then found out about External USB Sound Cards.
Does anyone know anything about them? How they work? If they are any good? If they work like normal sound cards? If anyone has one?
I don't want to spend a fortune on it (as I don't have a fortune to spend), but would like to go for a semi-decent one with dedicated driver support, etc..

look at the hercules external MUSE sound card

it seems to be pretty good, i havent done loads of research but if you want something with nice sound and pretty easy to use i guess this would be somthing to look at and its like £30 which is what.... $60 ?
O ye had a look at your site, saw your sister in Cambridge on saturday  kinda hard to miss her

LOL, no way? she's got her own site too (http://emzy.co.uk/) - you should have run up to her and said something like "I'm your biggest fan", she would have liked that LOL

OK, minor update (not that anyone cares  ) I've ordered the Philips PSC805 Aurilium... and |I'm glad I did, I've since read some reviews and they are all highly recomending it.
When I get my laptop back, and the unit gets delivered, I'll update you all on it.
