Challenge To Programmers

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I was getting ready to download a freeware utility today from a site that had a few ads on it. This got me thinking on whether the program I was downloading contained any type of spyware or adware in it. I then got to thinking about how spyware works and how virii work.

Normally I scan every file I download since I don't download massive amounts of files at one time I can normally just scan the folder I download to. I also scan files within zips, rars, etc.

Those two things separately are great for protection, but I think it is time that someone programs a utility that scans files before they are installed to see if there is any type of malware, spyware, or adware within the program. I'm no programmer, but I think this would severely cut down on the adware out there if people were scanning their software first, then from that decide whether they really want to load the said program.

Many times people do not want the adware or spyware loaded. I don't think it would be significantly difficult to program such a utility since most spyware has some sort of fingerprint or program that it has to install in order to work correctly. DivX even comes bundeled with adware; it lets you know before you download, but nonetheless it is annoying to get "freeware" program that has causes popups or ads to be displayed.

It seems with all this commericalization of the internet that companies just want to bombard us with stupid ads that don't really do anything but annoy the smart people and facinate the idiots that click on the popups.

If anyone does indeed create a program that does this: Scans files for spyware/adware BEFORE they are installed I give them props and a pat on the back for helping out the online community!
