my pc freezes PLZ HLEP ME!

whenever i start up my pc it seems fine but after a few minutes or hours, the time varies, the computer freezes. it doesnt shut down but the comp just freezes. when i start it up again sometimes a thing pops up asking if i want to start in safe mode but i cant move the mouse! so im stuck for 20 seconds waiting for it to shoose automaticly.
I have windows xp professional.

Also, were there any changes made to the OS (ex: loading new software) that caused this or does it just happen randomly?

it just freezes randomly sometimes itl freeze minutes after i start the computer and sometimes longer
