New A64 temps WAY too hot

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Bix VT

So I finally got my system built but it's running way too hot for my tastes...here's the important data:

DFI Lanparty UT nF3 250Gb
AMD Athlon 64 3200+
2x512 Mushkin PC4000
GeForce 6800GT
80 gig Seagate SATA
Onboard sound
Antec TruePower 430 PSU

As soon as I got the package from FedEx, I opened it and installed the on my mobo, taking all the proper steps (priming the hsf, etc) using AS5. I'm using this hsf here with the fan pushing it's full 72cfm. At IDLE my system never goes below 60C. I've been too afraid to overclock it or even put it under load yet due to these rediculous temps. Did I do something wrong? If these are normal temps for an A64 with this hsf at 100%, I'd hate to see the temps on the retail hsf...

I'm hoping to AT LEAST get my idle down below 40C.

Thanks!

How much AS5 did you put on? It only needs a little dab in the middle. What case do you have, how many case fans and what are your case temps? Also try resetting the heatsink making sure it is on properly.

Posted by: redwench

maybe you put the fan in backwards?

Posted by: SKYHN

What kind of case do you have and what type of cooling does it have? Case cooling is a big factor.

On some mboards with nForce3 chipsets, the onboard probe can give off inaccurate (and VERY often too high) readings. Try using a probe other than the onboard one (the HSF set you have comes with its own probe I think) to confirm/invalidate those temps. Sometimes, a BIOS flash can fix the problem...

Posted by: Bix VT

My NB temp is 32C, ambient temps are 21C and the exhaust temp from my rear fans rings up at 26C. I have a total of 64cfm going in and 64 cfm going out, not counting my PSU. The airflow area is completely clear of all cables. I put enough AS5 on to cover about 75% of the chip, VERY thinly. And the fan is on the right way, my bleeding knuckle can attest to that.

Posted by: Bix VT

Fixt. I flashed my BIOS with one made by someone on ocforums.com and now my readings are down to 45C idle, which I'm sure I can fix by reseating my hsf with a better AS5 distribution.

Posted by: Bobaroo

Yup, some BIOS have problems reading the temperature correctly

O, I demand pics of the computer

Posted by: Bix VT

ok. I'll take em right now.

Posted by: Bix VT

grr I took em but my web host is down so I'll have to post them later when it's back up.

Posted by: Maverick

send to me, ill put them on 86ed, or just attatch them to this thread.

Posted by: Bix VT

well I could attatch them...

I'd rather just wait till it comes back online.

Posted by: quiksilver87

That was the HSF i was gonna get! Lol there was no possible way that there would be high temps with the venus 12 and AS5...yeah the reader was surely the problem there.

Isnt that thing loud on full blast?!?
Did you do your watercooling machine yet?

Posted by: Bix VT

No, still waiting for the cash for it...it's gonna cost me around $300 for the whole setup.

Lol, and yeah that thing is loud...and dangerous. I was plugging in the speed control while the comp was on and my knuckle grazed the fan blades...cut pretty deep. I was surprised.

But yeah, on full speed the thing sounds like a friggin hair dryer...

Posted by: quiksilver87

yeah i figured....like 45 dba or something right? damn that cut must have sucked...did blood get anywhere on the computer?? lol you couldve shortcircuited something!
Are you gonna transfer those parts to your new watercoolingcase when you get the money? Or are you gonna buy separate parts for it?

Posted by: Bix VT

Definately just going to remove all componanats from my A64 system and put them in my watercooling case.

Finally got my webhost back up, here are the pics of the pc:

And here's a pic I just took about 5 minutes ago of my knuckle:

I definately reccomend turning the comp off before working around the fan when it's at full speed. Cuz it hurts if you don't.

Posted by: quiksilver87

VEry VERY nice looking pc!!! how many fans do you have in the front??LOl for a second there when i was scrolling down i though you completly lost a part of that finger becoz you had you middle finger clenched...

What are you gonna do with that case then?

Posted by: Bix VT

no fans in the front. where would they draw air from?

I'm probably just going to end up building another PC with the case...I still have my DFI NFII Ultra Infinity that's sitting around doing nothing, and I gotta admit, I loved the way that XP-M took the voltage and just kept running faster and faster...

Posted by: quiksilver87

oh ok...i see...the fans in the bottom seem to be quite beneficial to get some air under the HUGE gpu!
ah yes...since it seems to be a very good o/cing mobo...

Posted by: Bix VT

If you ever buy an Athlon XP system, get that mobo and an XP-M chip. great combo.

too bad the Infinity is notoriously bad with CPU overvolting. The regulator they used is only rated to 1.85v... pretty sad considering how much they pumped up the NB and RAM values. But the board does pretty damn well even with that flaw, so I'm not complaining

You should have fans in the front. I believe that case has either a slot for two or 4 fans in it, I would suggest 1 x 120mm or 2 x 80mm Fans to suck in some cool air into the case. Otherwise there is just warm are being thrown around in it

Posted by: redwench

yum, blood.

So much the better, actually http://www.touslessmileys.com/modul...age.php/155.gif

i dont think it has space for 4fans in it...there is a raidmax case that looks exactly like that that does that....however that case isnt raidmax...How could it suck cool air in if there are no holes in the front to suck in air from! If any more fans are added that will mess up the CFM equilibrium ....i think he can add one more becoz of the PSU!

Posted by: Bix VT

Bobaroo, I have two 80mm for intake and 2 80mm for exhaust, all pushing 32cfm. The only thing that throws off the balance of the equation is the PSU fan. But I can barely feel any wair coming out of it, maybe 10cfm, so I'm not too worried.

Posted by: quiksilver87

did you do any wiring management in there? I can see anything because of the reflection...

Posted by: Bobaroo

What water cooling system will cost you $300?

I paid $170 for top of the line

Posted by: Bix VT

$170 for top of the line? Is that including the cost of the cpu block, nb block and vga block, as well as coolant?

Posted by: Bobaroo

no NB Block (overkill and useless)
No vga block (have a silenet HS on it)

WB was a Dtek WW Block
90% Distilled Water
10Y% Prestone Anti-Freeze
10ft Cleerfex 1/2' ID tubing
VIA Aqua 1300 Pump and Reservoir

The pump is said to be weak. Its quiet and works great in my small setup

Posted by: Bix VT

NB can be useful in some applications, like my NFII Infinity...it runs at a constant 50C the way I have it set up.

And I'd have to have a vga block.

Posted by: Bobaroo

Yes but it is much better to get an aftermarket aircooler for your NB rather then lower your flow with the NB WC

if you want to watercool make a new thread here. Taco and I can help you greatly and i am sure a couple others can

Posted by: Bix VT

I definately do want to but I'm not ready to buy the stuff yet, so I'll wait to make a new thread about it.

thanks though, and I think you're right about the NB waterblock, although I don't know of any good NB air coolers...

Posted by: Superfly3176

How is that board bix? It was supposed to be the best Nforce3 250gb out there.

On this nice cool morning I sit at 22C idle(CPU). Did you oc it yet? Results?

My mommy is buying me a Thermaltake Tsunami case for christmas. She looked at the picture on newegg and said its gonna be a slim christmas. Than I showed her the 480Watt Antec True Blue powersupply I wanted and she said that that was christmas.

Posted by: Bix VT

lol

The board is great so far, except for the incorrect temp readings. I haven't OCed it yet, I'm going to wait for the AS5 to cure first. I'm pretty sure I can get at least 2.6 out of it though.

Posted by: Bobaroo

NB coolers are easy

I use the Vantec Copper Iceberq, But I know many people use and love the SWIFTECH CHIPSET COOLER or the Microcool NB cooler

And they come with heatsinks for your mofsets.

Posted by: Bix VT

Wow, that microcool is the first one that I've seen that actually looks like it could do the job right. I looked at the thermalrights, but decided that the fins were too thick...

Posted by: quiksilver87

where did you buy the venus 12 from?

Posted by: Bix VT

CompUSA

I was willing to pay the extra cash in order to have my PC operational RIGHT THEN because I forgot that I ordered the OEM chip and then forgot to order a HSF as well. So I paid the extra $ because of my mistake.

Posted by: quiksilver87

oh ok....because u just saw a venus 12 for 16$$....on ebay...shipping included!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...6711004099&rd=1
It has like 12 minutes left....

Posted by: Bobaroo

blah thermaltake

thermalright > thermaltake

Posted by: Bix VT

true. but also more $ + you have to buy a separate fan

Posted by: quiksilver87

it actually does come with a fan...but no controller.....the fan is used though
anyways.....how much did you pay at compusa?

Posted by: Bix VT

$45

Posted by: Bobaroo

Slk 900 + Panaflo M1A

But I like my water cooling

Posted by: quiksilver87

do you think Id need more than stock cooling for heavy gaming on my amd 64 3500?

Posted by: taco_fox

no, stock coolers are designed to adequately cool the processor at full load.

Posted by: Bix VT

Assuming you don't overclock.

Posted by: quiksilver87

oh ok....lol no i dont
