slow dvd-rom drive

I just bought a Samsung DVD-ROM drive. It takes a ridiculously long time to load dvds, and to copy data over also. I have it set to cable select, second to my cd-burner.
I had a similar problem with mulitple harddrives set in a master/slave config. But once I set it to cable select it worked fine. The other this is that the DVD-ROM drive replaced a CD-ROM drive that worked fine on cable select.
