Random powerdowns

A friend of mine is experiencing some odd symptoms with her machine.
It began occasionally freezing awhile ago, and nowadays, it freezes and then after awhile, powers down itself. After this, she has to let it sit for awhile before being able to turn the machine on again (at which everything returns to normal until another crash/powerdown)...
It seems unlikely that heating is an issue, considering that she's running some pretty basic components off a server tower, and her fans all sound like they're running well (though I have not actually confirmed that they are... something I should do...)
She should also be getting clean power since it's hooked up through one of those multi-button surge protectors (the ones you put your monitor on top of which have different switches for, say, monitor, computer, etc.).
My initial guesses are that her power supply is borked, or that maybe perhaps her mobo isn't happy. But I'm not so sure because it seems to me that if either were the case, her computer should just stop working entirely instead of sporadically. I'm unclear as to the rest of the details, as she could only describe so much to me (including the nice little "cheeeeu" sound that the computer was supposed to make when it turned itself off).
Any ideas?

To be honest I think your first thoughts about heat might actually be correct. Try running it with the case side open and maybe a normal deskfan blowing some cool air into it. Do a finger tet on the cpu cooler as well.
PSU might also be overheating, finger test that as well. SOunds too much like heat to just push that aside.

dont stick your finger on things. just download a temperature monitor and run it.
as shes only on a surge protector and not a ups, her incoming power isnt clean. so it could be anything between the wall outlet and the motherboard.

Yeah, I'm hoping that it's just a broken fan or something, rather than unclean power, since the former is easier to fix... Thanks for the suggestions, will update as soon as I get my hands on the computer to start debugging it.

nothing easier to fix than unclean power. its just rather costly.
