Wow. You're using Twisted Pair Cat 5? UTP 5 is the most common. Anyways, you said "the shared files only turn up in the "My Network Places" on the computer " That is what is susposed to happen What exactly are you trying to do? You can "MAP NETWORK DRIVE" so that a shared folder, etc shows up in My Computer as a storage device. A little bit more info on what you're trying to do, and I will try to further help you.

what im trying to do is move all my mp3s and what not from my old computer to my newer and faster computer. just moving large amounts of data from one to the other.

Then its a mere click and drag process, jim. Navigate through My Network Places to the location of the "mp3s and whatnot" on the older computer, select what you want to move to your new computer, and just click and drag in the destination where you want them to be located. Anything else?

that my problem. i cant drag them as there is no where to drag them from. as on my new computer i cant see the shared folders from the old computer. and vice versa

Okay, I understand now. How is your network set up? Are you going through a hub/switch or using a straight-through crossover cable?

straight through crossover cable.

Can you see the {old} computer at all from My Network Places, on the new computer?

Are both computers in the same Workgroup? Have you dragged all the files you want to share on the network to the "Shared Documents" folder under "My Computer"? Have you enabled network sharing on the files you want to share? Once you've dragged the folder to the "Shared Documents" folder, right-click the folder you want to share. Select "Properties," then click the "Sharing" tab, then select the checkbox to share the folder/file on the network.

Thats what I was getting at as well. Because it is very likely that if he doesn't see the computer at all, then both computers are on two different workgroups.

when i go to "Veiw workgroup computers" both this one and the old one are both there so i dont understnad what the problem could be. and i tired dragging ti to my shared folder in netowrk places but when i try to open that it says ..... is not accessible. you might not have permission to ..... and i havnt set anything up to stop me viewing it at least.

Double check the following steps:
right-click the folder you want to share. Select "Properties," then click the "Sharing" tab, then select the checkbox to share the folder/file on the network. (as Shalome said)

ok have done that but it still doesnt turn up

You may need to reboot both computers before it all shows up. Don't ask me why, Windows just likes to reboot.

ok i tried rebooting both of the computers. but still nothing. i can only access the files on the computer that they are allready on. when i want to move them to my new computer.

OK, it's back to basics - first step, do you have any connection at all ?
Open a Command Prompt windows and type 'ipconfig /all'.
Do this on both computers.
If you get 'no network resources found' (or some such) you have a Network Card problem (or a driver problem)
Each computer (lets call them 'A' and 'B') should have a (different) 'IP Address'.
For example 'A' might show IP Address . . . . . . 169.254.0.1
and 'B' might be IP Address . . . . . . 169.254.0.2
If the IP adresses are IDENTICAL, then the cable is bad.
Assuming you have 2 IP addresses similar to above, then in the command prompt on one computer, try to 'ping' the other.
(for example, on A, type 'ping 169.254.0.2' )
If you get 'destination unreachable' or 'no response', then have the cable checked out.
Otherwise, post up what you get from ipconfig.
