X-Box problems.

I haven't used my XBox in like... 3 or 4 months. Today I bought Fable for about 50 USD. I play for about half an hour at first, then I go to equip an Iron Katana and BOOM, game freeze. I keep trying to play again and after about five or ten minutes, BOOM, game freeze again. Now, I know everyone's thinking it's the game, but I really don't think it is. Why?
1) The XBox has been inactive for months
2) The XBox makes that annoying clicking noise when playing Fable
3) I checked the disk under a damn bright light, no scratches at all
4) It was in a sealed case that I bought from Wal Mart
5) I sprayed the whole XBox with air in a can to try and clean it a bit
So, any ideas what I should do? Have the XBox serviced? Replace Fable?
Oh and this isn't the first time this has happened. When I played Star Wars: KOTOR, it would sometimes freeze up every now and again as well. Granted, it was used, but it was cleaned three times.

Sounds to me like your xbox is melting down.. I'd try to use your fable on someone elses xbox if you possibly can and see if it functions.. If it is a hard lock up after just a bit of play I'd suspect that the xbox's ram has gone bad... however I don't believe that it can be swapped out so.. if fable works on someone elses box and not yours I'd have to suggest either sending the xbox in for servicing or tossing it and buying a new one..

I have been looking into this problem as well. I was able to play for about 6 hours and then it would just lag to death and then eventually lock up. I heard that the older X-Box's have a different HD than the newer ones and therefore newer games crash on it. But I got that from the x-box forums and those people arent the most reliable of the sort.

I think it does have something to do with the 1st generation hardware of the xbox, including but not isolated to the hardrive, i just can't believe that they have both no fan or case on the powersupply that sits under the harddrive..

I have an old x-box (first release) with a new samsung drive (replaced by microsoft) and a brand new copy of fable. The lockup problems occur only with this game and are non-stop (if I'm lucky, I'll get to a world-save before the game chokes).
I've added a heatsink to the small Nvidia graphics processor, replaced the gpu fan and the thermal paste on all chips. and I've used a bypass to add 12v power to the case fan (I also cleaned the system out). This should substantially decrease the operating temperature based on some specs I've seen, but this has no effect on Fable lock-ups.
I have seen rumors that older x-boxes wouldn't work with Fable. If this is true, I'd think there would be more people complaining in forums, etc., but maybe people have just become complacent with the reliability and quality of the products they purchase.
I hope someone will let me know if they have any solutions other than buying a new x-box. I'd rather just replace the mother-board or something (cheaper?). Especially with xbox 360 coming out soon. Can the ram be replaced?

You're kidding me. I did not realize at all that they had no fan or case on the psu. Hahaha... wow... talk about a botched job there... and to top it off.. it sits under the harddrive? Hahaha.

Are you getting dirty disc errors? The first generation Xbox shipped with a Thompson drive that is known to crap out after a while - could be your time. When mine started dying I bought a Samsung drive off of eBay that was already modded and ready to install. Since then my Xbox has worked like a charm.

Actually, microsoft replaced my thompson with a samsung (for free, after I pestered them about it--- really cool). The drive seems to work great with all other games-- no lock-ups whatsoever! Weird.
