Modem Tweaks actually work?
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

I've tried practically every modem tweaker for my dial up 56k modem known to man. None of them work or are so miniscule thats its not even noticable. I run on Windows ME and connect to earthlink. I get an average download around 3. Anyone know a actualy good tweaking program thats freeware.
Oh, and do these tweaking programs actually work? many of my friends believe its just a big scam, let me hear your thoughts

TweakDun works wonders for dial-up on Win95, Win98. I don't know about WinME. And it's a free download. Run it once and uninstall it after. The registry settings are kept. Don't get carried away with tweaks.
You only really need one or registry changes. The most significant change these programs will make for you is called MTU Transmission size. The other tweaks don't have that much effect and can make your system unstable. Try one tweak at a time. Reboot each time to make sure it is enabled.
Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP don't receive much benefit from these type programs because these operating systems are self-tuning with their network protocols.

if ur getting 3+ kps then ur above average for dialup. i wouldnt worry about tweaking since it can lead to disconnects in games if u mess with it too much. since ur getting 3k transfer ur doing pretty good as long as ur not losing connect in games. WinME does a much better job at handling internet, both broadband and dialup, than win98 or 95.

janna.. I can get up to 7 average kb/s if I close ICQ and use nothing but the download for bandwith.
I'm on 56k, even though serious sam demands I use the ISDN quality connection setting otherwise I skip all over.
my average is 4-5 with b.net/ICQ/Aim/ and usually a browser running.

ur not actually getting 7. most a dialup by definition can do since it is limited to 5.4 or so is 5.4 if everything is perfect. windows doesnt always get the transfer rate right some modems are capable of using two phone lines to double the rate and folks can get up to 10k transfer rates like that. but a standard dialup will never exceed 5.4 in reality. at least right now

Janna, you have some stuff mixed up.
Dialups are limited to 54kbps... kilobits per second.
Which translates in to just under 7k/s.

My friend used NetSetter and it worked really good. He was using Win98, so i dunno if it makes a difference but heres the link.
internetboost
I think this is still free but i not sure, and if u use more then 1 ISP, it may not work. Try it.

I've tried a couple modem boosters but they never work even if i do tweak max mtu it still has no great change cause my max speed is controlled by the isp, but you guys might be different

I heard one tweak you can do is : Right click my computer, select properties, select device mgr, open ports, select communications port, click properties, and choose port settings, click bits per second and scroll down to 921600 and select, then click on flow control and choose hardware. That's it! It seemed to work for me. Anyway give it a try!

That just makes your max connection increase. and if you have a 56k modem u don't goover 56k....but it helps

I found this program, not sure if it works. Dial-up is limited though.
