...I guess they intended it for people that don't have an ISP? but then how would they ever see the order screen in the first place?

wow you're really on top of things
i think the only thing 'retarded' about the link you posted are the hundreds of anti-microsoft kids in that thread thinking they caused some kind of financial disaster to a company with funds that they can't even comprehend. LOL micro$$$$$$$$luts LOL

actually, that is a pretty retarted thing of MS to do...hand out cds with SP2? just download it...
Posted by: TotalRecall
What?
The SP2 download was over 250mb. For slow downloaders, that could take a while. Microsoft didn't have to provide the CDs, but they did, and those dumbasses exploited it just to waste resources and time.

How dare they provide a convenient service for people with slow connections. Better exploit their caring and understanding behaviors! And while you're at it, be sure to tag on great descriptive buzzwords like "retarded!"

the childishness of this flaming is retarded.

Yep, and these are the same yahoos who complain that Microsoft software is getting too expensive ... guess what, their "antics" might just possibly increase operating costs some more, and that would reflect on software prices.
Way to go a-holes

BUT BUT MI$RO$$$$$O$$OT HAS TOM UCH MONEY GREDY SUNS OF BITCES
Posted by: Bix VT
oh come on, it's only about a 20 hour download with a 28.8k modem...not like you aren't used to uber slow DLs with those speeds anyway...
w/e, it's their money to waste.
Posted by: TheeMon
uhh sir, itd be 25hr download on a 28.8k modem (10megs per hour)
Posted by: Spork Lover
That's a fluke... it wont happen again without some effort. When you do these things you can never completely jack-ass / idiot proof it.... but at least they responded.
Microsoft limits the quantity of Windows XP Service Pack 2 CD-ROMs that may be ordered by a single customer to 5 CD-ROMs. Please note that 1 CD can be installed on several computers running Windows XP, and can be shared with others. Accordingly, you may not order more than the 5 CD-ROMs limit.
If you are a business or other institution looking for multiple Service Pack 2 CDs to distribute, please contact your local Microsoft representative or account manager for more information.

Would you quit trying to justify this stupid scam? Not everyone has a CD burner, and they're less likely to if they have a 56K. Its quite easier to have a program on a CD if they format.
Not everyone relies on the internet and has to take it this seriously
Posted by: Bix VT
...if I'm not mistaken, the main reason for SP2 would be internet security issues. Somehow, I don't think this would be as big of a concern to someone running dialup.
And I'm not trying to justify the scam, the only thing more retarded than the MS offer itself would be the fact that someone would waste their time just to get a whole crapload of CDs that they will never even use. Thus making more work for everyone, including themselves, just to cost MS a whopping $1,000. out of how many billion again?

8.8 billion in profit
Posted by: Ocean
i install internet access to all sorts of people who are rich and have nice computers (several 3 grand machines in the house) in big houses on top of mountains miles away from running water or dsl or cable or even street adresses of any kind.
these people use it also. (until they learn about 2 way sattellites)
haveing 56k doesnt mean you are poor or dont have a cd burner. it just means broadband isnt available yet)
and there are lots of crappy dial up ISPs that wont let you stay connected for 25 hours straight.
basically, microsoft is doing something good, and its wrong for these people to rip them off in this aspect.

but they're making 8.8 billion in profit how can we let them get away with that
Posted by: Ocean
im not entirely against ripping them off. but rip them off in ways that are relevent to why they suck. if ie has shitty security. hack it more till they learn or get sued to the point where they learn. if their office software sucks for the price it is offered at, promote open office instead and boycott their product.
but if microsoft decides to give away a free computer to every poor family in america. dont find a glitch, and order 500 of them. (i know extreme example)
thats is the wrong way and the wrong place to fight.
i guess this post would fit better in that thread, just a clarification i felt like saying.

ripping off microsoft is unpatriotic! give em a tax cut instead!

seriously, scams like this affects how these companies see consumers. the next time you get the feeling that these companies are abusing you, blame these yahoos doing the scams for making them think all of us will do the same thing
