Second hard drive not showing after start

I have a second hard drive that is showing in Bios, however it is not showing and picking up when computer is started. When I look for the D: drive it is "missing"...this has just recently started happening. I know the drive is there because it sporatically picks up and all the information is still available.

Both hard drives are 80 gig and are the same age...both new when I installed WinXP about 6 months ago. A few times it is back on the "My Computer" if I reboot or restart, but the past 2 days cannot get it to come back. I just checked in Bios ...the board is a new ASUS...and it is definitely picking up there.

Please advise...Thanks

start by checking the cables and running the hard drive diagnostic program. moving it to the other ide channel may help.

backup whatever data is on it the next time it does show up.
