Hi,
I wonder if someone can give me a hand - I have a weird problem with a Vaio PCG-F403 that I am struggling to understand. It is now not starting up properly, but the hard disc starts cycling on power-up and the system only displaysthe start of the VAIO display on the screen. I have checked the internal power supply voltages as best I can, and they seem fine. Could this be a virus or a power supply problem? It is as if the system is resetting constantly after a second or two of operation.
Totally confused...
Many thanks,
Vincent

Depending how much you know about computing,
1) you could check first the BIOS if you get acces there.
2) Use Knoppix, Slax Linux via bootable CD Rom
3) try windows 98SE boot floppy disk or any DOS disk that should boot your VAIO to DOS, well just to make sure that the computer boots. If you do not have floppy then try equivalent bootable CD.
If you have no access to BIOS or cannot use booting to DOS then there is a change that the power supply is failing but device like hard driver will stop you from starting your computer.
If the hard driver has bad sector/cluster or speed (spindel motor) problem there is no way booting the OS installed on it, but if you can access the hard driver via one of the Linux then there is a change that the boot.ini is destroyed on the hard driver. Depending your knowledge on computing you could fix it via DOS booting by inspecting the problem and editing it.
Last option is that you have had serious virus/worm, then I would recommend just reinstall the whole OS and the drivers and the software you need.
Hard driver fails during 5 years and a power supply should last 5 - 10 years (then gets dryed soldering, components become transistors unstable and capasitors leaks).
Hope this gave some idea to start with.
