heat problems?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Finally got my new pc setup to where I can start testing it on games. I watched the temp in the BIOS for a few minutes and the hottest it got was about 36C/93F. And that's with the cpu fan pointing toward the cpu and 1 exhaust fan not far from the processor itself. I started with Rome: Total War and the first try went well, but I quit the game shortly after the first map loaded. I started the game again, and before the map loaded, it crashed.. I tried again but this time i turned off the auto restart and turned the sound acceleration to standard. No good, but this time it just freezes and I have to manually shut off. Not sure if it's heat or something software. I have another fan that i can use as an intake but i need to change the plug. All drivers have been updated. I even checked the temp immediatly after the restart and it was no more than 35C.

Athlon 64 3000+
Asus k8v
kingston 512mb
Sound blaster audigy gamer
450watt Allied psu
Radeon 9600XT 128mb
Win XP

let the thing sit in windows with a temp monitor running. if it doesnt do anything exciting, start surfing. proceed to a different game if all goes well.

of course, this is assuming all your drivers are updated, you have sp2, and the latest directx

what temp monitor should i use? the only one i know of is the bios when booting up.

There is a good monitering software called Everest but nothing beats your BIOS imo at least for cpu's. It doesn't look like your having cpu temp issues though. It very well could be a different peice of hardware, so I'd recommend running everest http://www.lavalys.com/products/ove...ang=en&pageid=1, if you see anything high, that may be your problem

your motherboard manufacturer provides a monitor, either on the cd or available for download.

motherboard monitor 5 is a good 1

I just put in another intake fan pointed at the pci slots so now my vid card and sound card are getting good air flow. Too bad I have to go to school otherwise I would test it now. What is the normal operating temp for my CPU? What should it be at when running games?

If heat is not the culprit, what else should I look at?

youd have to look up the specs for the 64, but as a general rule, it should be no higher than 50-55 under load for athlons.

if its not the cpu, it could be the video card, ram, or a software issue.

I downloaded everest and when I go under Motherboard - Chipset and look at the very bottom, it says my AGP is disabled. How do I activate it? It should already be activated.

That everest is a direct port of Aida32 and i believe both companies claim copyright. Hrrrmmmmmmm.........

Apparently Rome was giving me problems. I just ran Call of duty single player cranked and had no problems at all. When I quit the game the cpu temp was a comfortable 39C. Thanks for the help.
