Actually I think he meant a program to check if the speed is in keeping with the manufacturer's claims

get the model number and look it up online. and afaik, there is no way to check the physical speed of the drive, nor is there a need to. if its working fine, its running at whatever speed its supposed to, within reason. if its not working fine, run the hard drive diagnostics.

There is a proggy taht can test the speed that it reads at, but no the speed it spins at.
HDtach reads the speed your drive is reading writing at. pretty nifty progy. Picked up that my 60 gig was broken with it. it was readin at 3mb/s and using 100% CPU ... which is extremely bad :P
What also makes it cool is taht you can compare it to your drive or one that is similar to it from the list of drives it has taht you c an compare with.

Do you mean my hdd that went bust? Well I think it just gives you a general idea of what is up with the hdd. It tells you the speeds it is reading writing at and then gives you the opportunity to compare to a similar drive. it becoms pretty obivious if your drive is either borked or behaving as it should. Generally from what I could find with a 133 cable it runs at about 70mbs with 15%cpu usage and when its borked ( as mine is) at about 3mbs using 100%cpu
Unfortunately I have only used the proggy once or twice to test my hdd's at home, you can buy it as well and it then includes a few more features, but the free version pretty much gives a good idea IF your hdd is working as it should.
The only thing that gave away that my hdd might be giving issues was that my pc was struggling at startup and whenever I did more than a few things it would slow down completely for instance copying took AGES.
Duno if any of this made sense :d but I have used the proggy and it gave me the answer ( albeit I didnt want to hear it :P )

yes, i understood that. my question was if your hard drive diagnostic program found the problem as well.

naah, unfortunately it couldnt tell me the details, although I have to add that I didnt really go looking for the details of it. When I saw it was running pathetic and I couldnt get it to work properly I just went out and bought a new one, they are cheap enough nowadays
