setting the radeon 9200SE AGP vid card to 4x instead of 8x?

Hi there, a while back I bought a radeon 9200se which when plugged into my old p4vmm2 motherboard caused a dead black screen and the computer wouldn't boot. I can only guess that it's because I neglected to somehow inform the card that it was in a 4x slot instead of an 8x slot. What I'd really really like to know is if there is anyway to get the mobo to tell the vid card what kind of slot it is in. Or better yet, is there a way to set the card itself into a 4x mode? Any thoughts?

There is no need to do that - the card "knows" that it is in an AGP4X slot & automatically runs at 4X. So the problem you encountered lies elsewhere. A BIOS update might help...

nope, thats just a max data transfer speed. it runs happily at less.
if the board has onboard video, make sure its disabled. also check that the card is properly seated and has the power connected. the voltage supplied and the total output of the power supply are also factors.
from your wording, im assuming this card runs fine in another machine?
