PSU burned

Ok, so I had just finished plugging in my new PC and I turned on the PSU and I got a large amount of blue sparks and a loud cracking noise.

Before you ask, the voltage switch on the back of the PSU was set correctly. I have no idea what happened, but I do know that at least my PSU is fried, and I'm hoping for some help as to the extent of the damage.

And don't say I fried everything in the box.

Capacitor or something? Either way you need a repair or new PSU.

ok I'll head down to compusa for a new one...dang man that was an Antec too...

Warranty?

pff

yeah right, the thing has been overclocked all to crap

Posted by: redwench

no one in their right mind would repair a psu. id say you need a bigger one

Posted by: Bix VT

I have no intention of repair. I'm going out first thing tomorrow to buy at LEAST a 500watt. Antec, of course.

That shouldn't matter. Even if you were overclocking, and they can't prove that, the PSU should have been able to hold up since you probably weren't maxing it out. It didn't, and it should still be under warranty. The only case I can think of where it wouldn't is if you opened it up to adjust the voltages (assuming it has pots like my Sparkle [though there's no stickers that say the warranty is voided if I remove the cover on this particular model])

edit: actually, you might want to be wary of the wall socket you used. Usually when a PSU goes like that, it means it got some bad incoming power and killed itself before it killed the components hooked up to it

eh, I've replaced broken PSU fans more than once. Though I believe I already know what you think of my state of mind concerning computers

...here's the thing.

I had it plugged into the battery part of my UPS, and every time I hit the power on the PSU, it would kill the power to everything connected to the UPS (my monitor and speakers) and turn the UPS off completely. So I figured, ok...I plugged it into one of the non-battery sockets, the one that's just a surge, and flipped the switch in the back. blue sparks and loud noises.

I don't think the socket is a problem, I ran my P4 off it for the past year and it just started acting up now? I was even using the same UPS that I had been using for my P4 and everything...

I am completely confused.

its indeed the power supply.

might be a damaged plug/cord that caused the problem, although the whole thing is toast now.

yeah, I'll buy a new power cord while I'm out as well, but the UPS is still running strong...I hooked it back up to my other machine and no problems.

-$100 from my bank account

oh well.

Edit: oh yeah, and thanks again everyone, for the great help, as always.
