Install windows on floppy's
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi there,
Since my CD-ROM doesn't work whatsoever, I have decided copying the cab files of windows 95 to 26 seperate floppy's. The rest of the win95 files go on 4 other floppy's. I have done this because I read it somewhere on the internet. Some manual about how to install windows through floppy's. I have done all it said, but when I try to run setup.exe of the 1st floppy I labeled "disk1" nothing happens. I just get this:
A:\setup.exe
A:\
It simply returns to it's root as if nothing happened. Should I do a sys a:?
I want to install windows 95 through floppy's.
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Many greets,
Valter a.k.a. =Keitaro=

Hi, i know for a fact microsoft have bootable disk programs you can download if your cd drive does not work i will send a link if you can not find it. www.google.com type in windows floppy drive installation or mix words around if not go to www.microsoft.com and search in the search box.

Thanks for the help.
I have downloaded "Windows XP Professional Utility: Setup Disks for Floppy Boot Install" from the Microsoft website. I did all that was asked. Until the point that I ran the setup of the bootdisk1 (6 floppy's) on my old PC. I got the following message after the program was inspecting my PC's hardware configuration:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows requires certain processor features that are not available on the processor
in the computer. Specifically, Windows requires the following instructions.
CPUID
CMPXCHG8B
Setup cannot continue, press any key to exit
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I really don't know what to do now..it's like this is all lost..
Any help is greatly appreciated,
Many thanks in advance,
Valter a.k.a. =Keitaro=
My system (yes, the old PC I'm trying to install win95 onto):
486 DX2
12 MB RAM
4x CD-ROM drive (which doesn't seem to work..)

Hi guys,
I did some searching on www.bootdisk.com and found a very interesting program.
It seesms that they offer a program that 'should' make your CD-ROM drive visible on booting up. So this makes me happy . Sounds like good news. Until I came to teh page saying "you should donate 4$" due to the popularity of these files. Well..I don't want to. Actually it's too much aof a risk. So if any of you guys know a link to that file..
cdindos1.zip (or exe, dunno)
It would be of great help. Here is teh article about teh file:
http://www.bootdisk.com/readme.htm#cdromdos
I hope you guys can help me.
Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Many thanks in advance,

you should be able to boot from a 98 bootdisk with cdrom support, then run the 95 install from the cd. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
and yes, those are still free.

Hi,
thanks for teh reply.
Yes, teh boot disks..
That's teh problem see. I hav downloaded win98 boot disks and 95 boot disks and yes with cd rom support and I have myself another bunch of generic cd rom drivers but nothing works.
It's dead.. well not really because I can see the light on when reading from teh cd.
It just doesn't work....
Well any ideas are greatly appreciated,
many thanks in advance,

thats a different problem altogether. does it work in any other computer?
Posted by: valter
Hi,
heh LoL, I don't know, I don't really have friends that would allow me to do that,
and my mother doesn't let me open my pc, which sucks, LoL. I don't know..perhaps I could take it to a store.. =\ or buy a new one? Perhaps it might be teh IDE cable? ...They said to me that it could be a dirty CDROM drive, that I doubt. Another one said that my CD-ROM might be too slow to read what's on teh WIN95 CD (4x).
I'll think about this.
If you have any alternative thoughts I would be glad to read them.
Many greetings,

rather difficult to perform necessary maintenance without opening the case. kinda like trying to run a car without ever opening the hood. but if she wants to pay for it to go to a shop every time it needs to be cleaned or anything goes wrong, i guess thats her privlege.
if its not detected in the bios, reseat the cable and power leads. should that not help, buy a new one. if it is detected in the bios, cleaning it would be a good idea.

Hi,
Well, it's not teh old computer (teh one with teh current 'bad' cdrom drive) my mother doesn't let me touch, it's teh new one =). But anyway, I don't know how I could notice should my bios detect my cdrom drive. Teh drivers for teh cdrom drive in teh boot disk say that my cdrom drive is E:. So teh disk creates a driver with letter E:. Teh diagnostic drivers are loaded in D:. There are a few options in cmos setup. User or several disk sizes. Then as subcategory I can choose as mode: normal, lba, large. None of those work. My PC only wants to boot normally when I put "none" for the D: drive in teh cmos setup. Yes, that is my problem. It isn't detected in the bios...
How am I supposed to "reset the cable and power leads". I don't know what that is or how I should do that...=( Could you help me on it please? Any reference on teh internet? =) Thanks. ^^
Many greetings,

reseat: to unseat, then seat again.
i dont understand what youre going on about with drivers. drivers are irrelevant to the bios, it either sees your hardware or it doesnt. if it doesnt detect your cd rom drive, its dead.

Hi,
Sorry, but could you please be more detailed on teh "to unseat, then seat again" part?
I'm not that good in hardware xD LoL.
