Posted about 2 months ago with some problems with this pc I built. I am still having problems to this day. Here is the link for the older post.
And here are the specs:
Mobo: ASUS K8V SE DELUXE K8T800 RETAIL
VGA: XFX 256 MB Geforce FX 5500 PVT34BUA RT
CPU: AMD 64 2800+ ATHLON 64 RETAIL
RAM: 512 MB Kingston pc3200 cas3
Optical: DVD+/-RW PLEXTOR|PX-712A BLACK RTL
HDD: WD 74GB 10k rpm SATA
Well, since my last post, I have gained some ground. I have the correct drivers for the HDD, and XP/W2k/98 all recognize it. Works fine. The first problem I encounter is that throughout any XP/2k/98 installation, certain files(dx7vb.dll, dx8vb.dll, mshtml.tlb, these three mainly have problems) have problems copying to the HDD. But I have managed to get everything copied correctly, and can boot from HDD to finish installation. But, now I get a BAD_POOL_CALLER stop error, as soon as the XP loading screen finishes.
I have gotten numerous other stop errors, but none of them are persistant, or repetitive.
Ok, now, all I have done to fix the problem:
First, tried dozens, literally dozens of different XP, W2k, and 98 cds.
Also replaced video card, tried a fx 5600 I have.
Also tried a different cd-rom
Underclocked everything
Tried different slots for RAM
Then I started replacing things:
Ram got RMA'd
Then I purchased a new PSU, just in case
Then I RMA'd the Motherboard
The only thing I havent replaced is the CPU
Throughout ALL of this I will get a stop error of some sort, at some point throughout the installation. Whether it is while copying startup files over to the HDD, or finishing installation on the HDD.
I have consulted with my old PC teacher, my new one in college, ASUS doesnt know what to do, a few techies around town are clueless.
Can any of you all think of anything?
Definite thanks in advance.

Files failing to copy, the way you describe, are typically a symptom of bad RAM.
Problem is, during install, files that ARE fetched OK (from the install CD) can still be corrupted (in RAM) before they are written to disk.
Then later, even after replacing the bad RAM, you get these corrupted files coming back and you think nothings been fixed (the disk dosn't know there's anything wrong - it just delivers back the same corrupted files it was asked to save).
When try to fix this sort of problem, you have to assume that whatever's on the HD: is suspect - so every time you change a component you have to wipe the HD: and start the install again - otherwise corrupted files caused by the actual problem keep coming back even if the problem was fixed two or three 'swap outs' ago ...

Aye, I have wiped it every time Ive tried to reinstall any OS, did a long format each time, and as well after every time I replaced something.
One thing I didnt add, Memtest86 with the old AND the new RAM both had 6000+ errors. All at test 5. With these combinations:
Old Mobo/Old RAM
Old Mobo/New RAM
New Mobo/New RAM

It does look like a RAM problem. Normally I would expect the new RAM to be fine ..
Are you overclocking ? (or set the BIOS to 'agressive' settings ?) - if so, drop back to standard.
Otherwise I guess it's another RAM swap. If still bad, then I guess it has to be the CPU ..

No, no OC'ing at all, and I even tried underclocking it. Yeah, I was boggled when the new RAM still got the same errors, and yes they are the EXACT same errors on both sticks. I think ill return the CPU, and hope for the best.
Thanks Again.

I finally got it to work, nearly one year after building it.
I replaced CPU: AMD 64 2800+ ATHLON 64 RETAIL with a 3000+, and it installs WinXP just fine, and in under 19 minutes. hehe
I love it. I cant wait to finally head back to LAN parties now. I feel so behind. :\ I have not been to one since last December, although I have had probably 15 invites, including LanWar and MillionManLan.
