hi,
A couple of weeks ago, my girlfriend bought a lcd monitor. Samsung synchmaster 712N. I heard these were good monitors for gaming with the 12 ms refresh times. I am running a p4 2.53(not overclocked), 3/4 gig of ddram, ati 97oo radeon pro. Before the monitor came to our house I was running a little 15 inch samtron crt monitor to replace the 17 inch that fried up on me. Keep in mined that everything on my system was working great at this time. My girlfreind computer wasn't running yet, so I decide to put the samsung lcd monitor on my system. When i did that, windows xp and all my simple applications ran great. But, when I went to load my games most of them crashed or the monitor blacked out, leaving me to reboot the computer manually. Madden2005 and starwars battlefront will basically blackout or crash on me when I first start a game in the first quarter of madden and when i start a new campaign for star wars. Tribes vengence is doing the same at the main menu screen. Call of Duty will crash anytime radomly during the game. I went ahead and updated my direct x, from direct x 9.0b to 9.0c. Then I updated my video drivers. I even tried messing with the refresh rates of the monitor in display properties. Well since then I took the LCD monitor off my system and got my girlfriends computer up and stuck it over there. I went back to my old crt 15 thinking that i am saved. Guess what I still have the same exact problems as I did when I hood up that LCD. So last night I reformated xp twice and reloaded direct x and my vid drivers, thinking I had some driver isssues that didn't setup correctly or go corrupted. I still have the game crashin problem. I am worried that my ati radeon 9700 pro is done for gaming. Can somebody help me.

well, since obviously formatting doesnt bother you, you get to do it again.
reset the cmos, partition and format the drive, then install xp. beyond that, check the temps on the cpu and gpu, and test your ram.
no, the monitor did not do anything to the card.

connect the lcd monitor back up and set the refresh rate and resolution to something managable, then check the crt. some LCDs black out when you change refresh rates other than the default of 60, whic plays an issue if you had a CRT set to 80 or 90 which is common. change it back to default for proper LCD usage. or after your LCD goes blank, kill the LCD power off and then back on.

I really think my vid card is going compute. I unistalled the newest catylist drivers and downgraded them to the 9.0 version. Seems I can play savage now all day with out the issues. but I came home tonight and the monitor was in standby mode with the pc running. Usually you just strike a key or move your mouse to bring it out, not tonight. Went to reboot and partically through the reboot the monitor kicked out in standby. So I shut it down while I showered and then booted it up.
What's a good gpu program to get that is free hopely, that will monitor my temps and stuff.

no gpu temp monitoring program cept for XT versions.
other cards dont have temp sensors on them.
powerstrip will let you underclock, if you are concerned, until you have your ps issue resolved

I always seen dumb things happen when you work with pc's. I decided to take out the radeon card to try to maybe reseat the card and clean the card. When I did take the card out, I noticed the fan and heatseek was not on the card properly. Somehow one of the pins that mounts that fan to the card got unpinned. It wasn't at all very noticable, just looking inside the case. But, it was off just enough to cause a heating isssue. My only explanitory reason this happen was, that I just clean out my case reasonly and posibly when blowin it out with air, it unpinned itself. Just food for thought to all that have problems like mine.. Check your card to see if everything is seated right. Fortunely the card seams fine. I am now back up running games and scored a little over 1800 on 3dmard05. I wonder if that is a little low for my system? Is there maybe a easy utilty to tweak my system a little? Any idea's how maybe I can improve my systems preformance.
Thanks all for your help on my current issue.

now the ole radeon died. After getting it back in the system, games played great and normal. It only took it about 2 days and the games went back on the fritz. Also I got discoloration in windows to the point I couldn't read forums and stuff. I did a reboot after that and all the words during the bootup sequence were distorted. When it went to show my xp desktop the monitor went black. I am sending it in for RMA service. Doubt they'll repair or replace it for free, but you never know. If I was wealthy the geforce xfx 6800 gt would be makin its way towards my pc.
