It's only 4 years right?...Right? For the first time in my life, I'm considering moving. If that many people here feel this way, then it isn't somewhere I feel comfortable living anymore.

What would be the best place in Canada to move? I'd like a low to moderate population, good internet access and a decent cost of living.

(Seriously)

Uh...the race isnt over. We wont know the results for 10 days.

Fox News and NBC jump to conclusions cuz their conservative stations.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

Well, Bush seems to have been finally "elected" as president, based on early projections (as opposed to being "decided in" by the Supreme Court four years ago) - although we can't really trust the media and pundits about this right now - look at the 2000 elections... can't say we didn't expect this to happen though I hope we don't implode because of this ... look on the bright side - if Iraq continues becoming a mess, at least the same guy who started it can continue to take the blame

Then again, who knows ... four years ago, I went to sleep with Gore as President ... the next day when I woke up it was Bush

I'm about to go to bed, and would dearly love to wake up to different news. I might even be inspired to run around my apartment complex in assless chaps, and I haven't even used those for 6 months.

edmonton

Posted by: SKYHN

Wow, is this the first time a president has attempted to claim victory by sending a stooge to go tell everyone?

Posted by: Chaotic

He's got more important things to do. (golf)

Kerry is apparently conceding at 1pm eastern. It's over.

Posted by: IceBreaker

The corporate state of fascism has prevailed.

Uncle Bin got what he wanted.

And the elections weren't even rigged - apparently.

To those citizens who voted against w: my condoleances. Hold on! Look at the "bright" side of things: during his 2nd term, junior will inflict so much damage upon the economy that the people will (hopefully) awaken from their collective slumber - and in 4 years, oust the conservatives once and for all.

I know, that's 4 more years.
Perhaps I'm being too optimistic. But then again, hope is all that's left.

Either that, or a civil war :|

So is Canada going to start accepting American refugees, Nova?

Personally, I"m waiting to see whether or not California secedes before I make my Canada plans.

Oh, and one more thing:

so, uhm, who's the next country in the war on terror list? Iran? North Korea? Canada?

So many countries to invade, so little time...

Posted by: armystud0911

Last I checked it was North Korea, we'll see how he sells it this time.

Posted by: Ocean

if any more americans die due to terrorism, he wont have anyone to blame. they have complete control of the government.

Posted by: redwench

i did read that his party was putting a lot of pressure on him to tone it down, particularly in the foreign affairs dept. its possible hell be reasonable in his second term. we shall see.

On the thought of Canada, why not apply for a job here, get a work visa (I dont think it is necessary for Americans) and then slowly immigrate into the country.

As for where to live, check out my hometown of Fredericton NB. Greater Fredericton population is under 80 000, we have two great universities and the largest/fastest internet backbone at UNB . That is the fastest east of Ontario. Fredericton is a quiet capital city with a majestic look, it is the city of stately elms on the banks of the Saint John river. I forgot to mention that we are the only city in Canada to offer FREE Wi-Fi access across town in all of Canada. We are also rated the best city across Canada to do commerce in.

Times like these make me feel good to be living in Canada, about 3 hours from Bangor ME. I don't feel safe with my goatee and being brown, down south, anymore. Meh, thank goodness for internet shopping.

PS If you every pondered the thought of where to look when searching for the Canadian Armed Forces, CFB Gagetown, the largest military base in the Commonwealth is only a 20 minute drive.

Well, one last thing(s) I have to say about all this:

America ended up being a conservative nation after all.
Religion seems to be the driving force in politics for majority of the people in this country.
The Republicans now control the Senate, the House, and soon the Supreme Court.
Faith-based initiatives will now have no problems being passed to law.
George Bush gets a fresh mandate to continue attacking countries suspected of terrorism, without any international approval.

I don't know about you, but I'm scared - more scared than I have ever been in a long time...

The civil war is coming people. Theres no stoping it. 1 thing had to happen for it to materialize, and it happened in this election. Im glad I have a friend who has a large collection of weapons and ammo, and shares the same views as me.

This guy lives out in the country, Ive been helping him build an underground armory for the last 6 months. Nothing elaborate, just your basic armory(like that one in T2, only not as many weapons).

Your Welcome Chaotic
We could use the population/economic boost, BTW please bring some of those doctors of ours that left us recently.

The only good and somewhat bad thing for Canadians in regards to GWB is the longer he remains in power and the stupider decsions he makes, our dollar seems to increase in value. It jumped to a NEW 12 YEAR HIGH today to 83 cents USD! This means we're losing to Japan and China in competitiveness due to the loss of value of the greenback. But it is good news for anyone up north who has a little spare change to visit Florida. GWB's 4 years have thrown our dollar 20 years back, in its regain of value. I can only imagine what disasters and havoc he shall create in forgein and domestic policy. Looks like the Cold War 2 aka WWIV is born. God bless STAR WARS! Did I mention, "This is your brain (Egg) and this is your brain on drugs (Fried Egg)." Looks like the Trudeauesque policies we Canadians love of "The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation" shall die in the USA.

Speaking of the Confederate Army, things just got easier thanks to Bush not reinstating the ban on automatic weapons. Maybe he is a larger bumbling idiot than we thought.....
Funny thing I always find is the USA is a very liberal country, yet almost always ruled by right of centre to hard right conservatives.

Because rich people have all the power. When something isnt going their way or they need something to go their way, they throw their money at it.

Only 1/3 of the country voted.

Posted by: elhior_manwe

There is some solace to all this bad news. Last Friday I flew to Pa to volunteer for MoveOn pac's get out the vote drive. There were hundreds of us along with the "paid"(they were not making much) employee's working in just one of the offices in Pa. On tuesday we had 160 new volunteers show up most from out of state Virginia, D.C., Maryland, even from North Carorlina. One man I spoke to came up on monday drove back monday night so he could vote and came back tuesday morning, it was a 4 hour drive for him one way. This was just one out of the 6 Pa offices, and MoveOn was just one of the many get out the vote drives in the country. In our office they had mobilized hundreds of volunteers in the months leading up to the election. My point is though many of us are in truth terrified by what W may do next and dissapointed in the blind Americans that voted him back into office, he has no MANDATE.
Even if he acts like he does. Almost half the country is incredibly angry with the current administration. There are two Americas now. We are certainly not alone........

...where did you see this? according to a preliminay estimate (http://elections.gmu.edu/Voter_Turnout_2004.htm) over 50% of eligible voters showed up

Posted by: redwench

well, he does have a mandate of sorts. the majority of the voters approved him this time. presumably, that means the majority of the country thinks hes doing a good job. and i hope he does a good job in his next term.

Posted by: AOTY2KB

Voter turnout is never a problem unless the voting populace has no clue who there voting for.
I'm appaled with the apathy the people showed in this election. So many "Get out the vote" NGO's and the chance to pick your lesser evil and still you had a lower turnout than we do in a bad year!

That majority represents 1% of the swing voting populace and "scared soccer moms" who think nothing else beyond security so long as they ain't receiving dead family from Iraq

Just to shed some light on why the Democrats lost this election, check out this op-ed piece:

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/11/03/o.../03kris.html?hp

Regardless, the fact is, the GOP strategy worked. The move was to impose the necessity to vote, and in this case, fear is more effective than facts. This sounds foreign to most of us who put a premium on facts, but the plan here is to get voted, not promote the facts. A typical American responds more strongly to a gun than a book. And in this election, the Republican strategy proved more effective.

So I suggest everyone to move on, and to hope that the Democratic party do the same soul-searching that the Republicans did many years ago. If the Republican majority in the government right now does an excellent job in the next few years, there's no reason for us to not have them stay in office. If they push for more partisan initiatives as a mandate from the people and do a bad job doing it, the "fear" of having a Republican in office will galvanize the people, the same way fear of terrorism galvanized them in the just-concluded election...

Posted by: AOTY2KB

So, from my understanding Laggy is that the Democrats have to work with the moderatlely fundamentalist religous groups? Sounds something like Republicans working with terrorists. It could work, something like the Arms for Hostages campaign Regan and Bush ran during the Contra War.

Posted by: Canis Lupus

I guess my point is that heartland America consider religion and values as the most important aspects of life. The truth is relative as far as they're concerned, and I assume that most will want to trade their rights just to feel safe and secure when they sleep at night. So I guess what I'm saying is a move toward compromise - try to find common ground. You know, the bipartisan way. From what I have seen, Democrats can do this more easily than Republicans can, mainly due to the fact that Democrats are more open to different ideas and different ways of doing things... This is of course just my opinion...

Once they find people who can cater to both conservatives and liberals favorably enough that they would seem more well rounded than their partisan counterparts, they will emerge as better choices in future elections...
