gfx card running slow

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Got my 6800 Ultra in...but lately it's been running slow, even in basic games. I have the latest drivers from nvidia and all that...any ideas?

Posted by: Superfly3176

If you haven't(but you probably do) run ad-aware, spybot and an antivirus. Maybe something is slowing you down.

Posted by: Bix VT

definately not any of that, I have spybot S&D run every night, as well as norton every sunday night...normal stuff like web browsing and file copying is still screamingly fast (gotta love the A64) plus it's only in gaming, mainly fps games. It just seems like I'm running on a gf4 mx440 or something.

edit: actually, it seems EXACTLY like a gf4 mx 440 (my friend has one in his P4 2.8, so I'm familiar with the speed it puts out)...except the images are higher quality. but still the slowness.

try completely wiping out the drivers with Driver Cleaner and reinstall the newest drivers

Posted by: Ocean

yeah my new ati drivers are doing the same thing with simple gl apps now. started when i updated drivers. i should probably follow the same advice.

You do mean slow, as in low frame rates, yes? I ask, because i used to have a problem with my Gigabyte motherboard, where i'd get perfect framerates, but everything would move in what can only be described as "Slow motion".

Anyway, other problems might be your motherboard, does it support AGP x8? I would assume so, due to your mention of a 64bit processor, but it's worth asking anyway.
Otherwise, try the above suggestions.

Yes, it's a DFI Lanparty UT nF3 250GB. And yes, when I say slow I mean 15 or fewer fps while playing call of duty on medium settings

check your chipset drivers too. and wander around the bios and your nvidia settings, see if something disabled the 8x. or run sandra

Posted by: Bix VT

oh, of course! forgot about sandra

thanks!

Posted by: Bix VT

hahaha! beautiful. I reinstalled the nForce drivers and now it takes my comp 15 minutes to boot into windows. I'm waiting for it to boot into windows again so I can remove the drivers and get some different ones...I'll keep everyone posted

Posted by: quiksilver87

PLease do! I JUST got my x800 xt PE and i dont want the same to happen!

Posted by: Bix VT

oy. I did a full reformat because after I wiped the nForce drivers, I got a BSOD. I tried repairing, but it didn't work.

Anyway, the problem persists...only this time I'm using omega drivers. I'm thinking it may be a hardware problem and not a software problem...

did you say this is in openGL apps or Direct3D as well? I can run farcry on ultra high, 12x10, 4xAA, 8XAF and get 31fps in Direct3D but in openGL I average about 6. I may have the same problem just not have realized it since it never affects my actual gameplay, just openGL benches. Are you running the 70.41 drivers btw? I am and they may have some openGL issues to resolve.

Posted by: Bix VT

one second I'll check my driver version...61.77. I'll look into that option today, thanks armystud!

Posted by: Ocean

the issue cropped up on my machine after i ran windows update the last time bout 2 weeks ago. nothing is fixing it. but it is only affecting simple open gl apps. like screensavers and such

Posted by: Bix VT

fascinating. on a hunch, I yanked the 6800 out of my A64 and put it in my P4...works fine. here's the deal:

System one:
DFI Lanparty nForce 250gb
A64 3200+
2x512 pc4000 Mushkin
GF 6800

system two:
Intel 845
P4 2.66
1x512 PC 2700
GF 6800

My 3dmark 2k3 score on system one was 7400, while my 3dmark 2k3 score on system two was 9900. It seems the graphics card is not the issue...I ran sandra, and all cpu and memory benches are where they should be.

any ideas?

Posted by: redwench

what does sandra say the video is running at? it should be 8x, but thats not necessarily what its doing. i assume you updated windows after the format, but did you check for newer chipset drivers? whats sharing the irq with the 6800?
if all else fails, search and see if its a known issue with the chipset, as that is what it must be if its not windows.

Posted by: quiksilver87

hmmm...BIX thats a tough one man! Did you try tech support for the graphics card you have? Even though the problem might not be with your GPU, you can ask them they probably will tell you something good...I am sure that this problem is pretty common.
did you try running a game on your P4??

Posted by: Bix VT

yeah games run great on it...I'm thinking maybe I should start looking at the motherboard as the issue...

Posted by: quiksilver87

my next guess would probably be the mobo...but call your tech support for the mobo to make sure...
It would be quite wierd if both of out problems end up to be defective motherboards....heheh

ok, I just ran several tests and then flahshed my bios to stock. I ran several more tests and flashed my bios to one provided by DFI a few months after release. Then I ran a few more tests.

Exact same reults every time. (in Call of Duty) if I run in a stright line with graphics set to bare minimum, it's slow. if I go into an area with lots of volumetric smoke and fog on max graphics settings, the performance is exactly the same.

so far, I have ruled out gfx card, ram, cpu and bios. I tried running sandra again, but it keeps locking up and won't give me a full report.

Posted by: redwench

ruh roh. sandra locking up is not good..........

Posted by: Bix VT

sounds like its time to take everything apart and put it back together again...
