HA! THIS SUCKS!
i have a MSI 865pe neo2-platinum MOBO which is a ms-6728 serires board version 2. bios is up to date. There is no boot option for RAID or SCSI or any other type of non onboard ide device. I'm posting this on the computer with the problem, i had to install suse 9.1 live from a CD straight to ram because it wont find the hard drives. I need to find some kind of boot disk softtware or boot manager that will identify my raid controller and let me continue to load WinXP pro. win XP pro had no problem detecting the RAID card for the setup files once i got a driver diskette from the manufacturer specifically for winxp_2k setup. I'm sure MSI will address this is one of their forthcoming BIOS FLASH upgrades, but until then i'm screwed. I'm open to any advice that doesnt include RMAing the MOBO or simply not running raid, because thats obvious. I am positive the raid is correctly configured and fairly certain that the problem lies in MOBO compatability.
Specs:
cpu p4 3.0 Ghz 800 FSB, 1 mb cache
mobo msi-865pe-neo2-plat
raid syba sb-ata8212-133r (running raid 0)
HD western digital 160 GB 7200 rpm 8mb cache x2-drives
ram corsair 2x512MB (1 gb) pc3200 400 MHz 2.5-cas
vid powercolor ati radeon-9800 pro 256-bit 128MB
PSuply logisys 500W
generic DVD-rom, floppy, + cooling fan
thanks for any help you can give me.

to be more specific, when you insert the disk with various raid drivers, and try them all, none of them work? i presume since youre using a 3rd party controller that your drives are not sata?
msi doesnt have a search feature, but here are their sata & raid drivers for all boards:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/suppo...d=4&CHIP=4&ID=1
the board should have no problems booting to scsi or raid if you use a controller.

So the problem is the RAID card works and you're able to install XP, but you're not able to boot the OS because there's no boot option for your RAID controller in BIOS?
If that's the case, then your only option until a BIOS fix would be to boot from another media type such as a floppy, or a CD with a simple boot loader. You might also check the BIOS options that are on the RAID controller. Usually those have a workaround for BIOS detection issues.
As for your Suse problem, their Live CD's don't have the best hardware detection. If you're wanting a bootable Live CD with good hardware detection, then Knoppix is by far the best out there currently.
You may also find a modified BIOS on the net that adds it. As long as you don't mind taking the risk. Using a modified BIOS will likely void your warranty.

I did some digging and I believe there's a BIOS setting that should allow you to boot up with that controller.
Check for a BIOS setting for "ATA Config" It's probably set to p-ata detection. Change it to s-ata detection. Even if your controller is p-ata, it's still considered a SCSI device so changing it to s-ata might work.

ION:
i have previously had the BIOS set up for "p-ata and s-ata" at teh same time and it did not detect the raid. i'm dling Knoppix right now from linuxiso.com but there was no "live cd" downlaod available, will i be able to install directly to ram with it like i did with suse 9.1 live? i'll probobly have already tried it by the time you get back to me so i'll just re-post the ans. for refrence..... as for the modified BIOS, thats a no-go. this PC is for my wife and should anything happen to it with no warranty ,she'd have my balls in her purse. she's already kind of pissed that HER brand new $750 pc doesnt work right.
REDWENCH:
The disk with the drivers is for win setup ONLY and does nothing to help my MOBO boot to raid. my raid setup is toggle to "bootable". the bios will deffinetly NOT boot to any scsi or raid controller. BIOS rev. 3a. i'm checking on that msi raid like as soon as im done posting........... the msi link you gave me was for "onboard" raid controller only, i have a 3rd party raid by SYBA.
once again, thanks for all/any help you can give..

All Knoppix ISO's are bootable I believe. You want the latest one though as it will have better support for newer hardware.
The one you want is at:
http://www.linuxiso.org/download.ph...04-08-16-EN.iso
At boot, make sure to specify to boot with a 2.6 kernel. I doubt the 2.4 kernel supports your RAID controller.

thanks, im going to try it right now.

raid card just plain sucks. im buying a different one from promise technologies. Knoppix installs + boots from its live CD WAY WAY faster then suse 9.1, but suse does have more support options and auto-detects my local workgroup in a much simpler way. Neither version will detect my raid card because, as i said before SYBA BL0\VS DONKEY A55. actually more of a rim job., i digress, MSI has reccommended adaptec, or promisetech for the raid. SYBA's customer support did reply to my email rather promptly, but they obviously diddnt actually read it. then sent me windows drivers, after i asked for either a BIOS upgrade or linux drivers. goes back to the addage, never time to do it right the first time but always time to to it again. i'll talk to you guys later.
