remote webcam ???

My question concerns remotely accessing webcams. I refurbish computers and give them to kids, and do troubleshooting for free. I'm the pastor of an outreach ministry, and that's one of the things we do. Some of the parents of the kids in my ministry have networked computers. And some of their kids have webcams. Is there any way they can remotely access the webcams, so they can monitor just what their kids are sending? As we all know what can go on in chatrooms, it's a big issue. I already use keylogger on some systems, but that doesn't tell anyone what's being videoed. I'm pretty good with hardware, software, and networking problems, but this is a new one on me. Hope someone can help.

I think it largely depends on the type of webcam. If the camera is wireless, networkable, or has built in web server capabilities, then yes. If they use those cheap 20$ webcams, then I doubt it unless they upload their webcam streams to a third party web server. In which case all you would have to do is access the stream from the Internet. I doubt they have anything that elaborate setup though.
You could just tell the kids that their webcam transmissions are being monitored and that you're using a keylogger. That would probably scare most of them from doing anything bad.

yes, there is commercial software that will allow remote access.

dont ever install any kind of spying software on a computer you do not own and totally control access to. you can inform the parents of commercially available software that will do this, but i doubt you want the liability that comes from installing a keylogger. you have no control over what that computer is used for, or who uses it, so you really dont want to install anything on it. Mr. Smith's 58 year old uncle probably wouldn't care to have his banking password logged, and is quite capable of coming after you and/or the ministry if you installed the keylogger.
refer parents that ask to commercial software, and inform them of their legal requirement to notify adult users (including thier offspring) and minor users aside from their own children of the use of the keylogger or camera access.

not really. its mostly a bunch of meaningless conversation about boys/girls, how stupid their teachers/parents are, how drunk someone got last weekend, etc. they might moon each other on camera, how exciting is that to monitor? software should never be used as a substitute for actual parental supervision.
