Hi there,
basically im looking to buy an AMD64 3000+ and have found 2 supporting motherboards at the same price, but i'm not sure which one to go for.
The 1st one is : Asus K8VSE Deluxe AMD Skt754 DDR400 +Firewire +SATA +RAID + WiFi +6Ch.audio +USB2. can be found here
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Produc...789&GroupID=302
The 2nd is: Gigabyte GA-K8NSPro nForce3 250 Skt 754 1600FSB, DDR400, SATA, RAID, GB LAN, 8ch Audio, USB2, F/wire ATX. can be found here
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Produc...591&GroupID=302
I was pulled towards the Asus as it had a wifi slot and i may be likely to have it on a home network, but the Gigabyte also has its advantages.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

youll have to evaluate the various features for yourself, as every user's needs are different.
if theyre equal in price, and equal in value to you, i would suggest the asus. simply because they have a better reputation in general, for both quality and honoring their warranties.

Well, it looks like your almost determining brands, both have
AGP 8x
5x PCI slots
Gigabit Ethernet
2x ATA
2x SATA
Firewire
USB 2.0
3 memory slots up to 3GB
The only difference I can see is that the gigabyte board supports 7.1 audio as opposed to 5.1- wooptido, anyone who is that serious about sound to have a 7.1 speaker setup will have an audigy.
Now as I said it pretty much comes down to brands, both gigabyte and asus are the industries leading mobo manufacturers, both have excellent ratings and feedback as well. Gigabyte has marketed itself a bit more to the hardcore gamers by being the first to have some really sexy looking boards. That may not matter to you, and thats cool, but there are some, like me, who think a stylish motherboard is a cool bonus.

Make sure you are looking at the nForce3 250gb boards. The other nForce2 ones are junk(unless its a socket 939, which you arent gonna be getting anyways).
Someone from here suggested the DFI 250gb before. I been checking it out and it seems pretty good, its pretty much an unlocked board you can OC it every which way. Im not really wanting to OC but the HT settings can be changed to give you a boost in speed without technically overclocking it.

sexy motherboard.........okaaaay
please dont select the main component of your system on the basis of appearance. unless youre just planning on looking at it and not using it, of course.

I was afraid you were gonna say that. My point was NOT that he buy his mb, on the basis of appearance, on the contrary I was illustrating that they are nearly identical in features, performance, price and reliability, in which case a pretty looking motherboard could tip the scales. Like I said its all a matter of preferance, if you just want something to perform, thats fine, thats your thing. There are people like me who crave aesthetics and beauty in every aspect of life and I enjoy, a PC that looks as well as it performs. Obviously they wouldn't make black motherboards with shiny copper nb coolers if SOME people didn't like them or were willing to pay a couple extra bucks for them.

Cool thanks for your advice guys, so basically it doesn't matter which one i get. I think i will probaly go towards the asus because of the brand and the additional wifi slot as i have seen the asus wifi headers quite cheap and offer more flexability than an ordinary pci wifi.

Personally I will never purchase another ASUS product in my life after the hell I went through helping my friend build his first computer. Omg, I couldn't sleep because I was so pissed off at that mobo. Plus I've run a Gigabyte mobo for about 2.5 years now and the only people I've seen complain about their mobos messinging up were the people that used ASUS. Then again it's probably because more people use it, but still.
Edit: Bah, haven't posted here in a while, forgot about the cursing, fixed it ^_^

I had the exact opposite experience as you. I had trouble with a Gigabyte MB and never had problems with ASUS.

enjoying the debate here...just a point in case to consider...working as a certified apple tech for an authorized apple service provider...i had the opportunity to replace literally thousands of hardware components on desktops and laptops, from sony, apple, compaq, hp, custom built, dell, gateway...etc. every single manufacturer will send you supposedly good parts that are bunk....crap...D.O.A. we all have the opportunity to buy parts from anywhere in the world...however, I have enjoyed developing relationships with individual small computer companies, or if I do deal with big ones...having my own service rep. I am in business for myself now...and it makes a huge difference to have that kind of relationship...i get sent a bad part...oh Mr. Redden...I've got another one on the way...send that one back at your covenience...I'll credit your acct for the shipping. Just something to consider.
