HDD questions!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hi,
Firsty i have a Maxtor 40gb in my pc at present which is a couple of months old and is fairy slimline. I also have a Western Digital 40gb that i got because i had one before and it broke so i sent it back on warantee. The original one i got a couple of years ago and it slightly chunkier.
Basically im going to build a new machine and dont want to buy a new sata HDD right away. But which one is better? I currrently have the maxtor in my pc now so id have to format etc, the WD is unused.

Secondly, the other day i was messin about with an old Cyrix II -333 machine, and i put the WD HDD in it, but i dont know why but it could not detect it, anyone know why? It detected older HDD's like 4.3gb and a 2.2gb or sumthing.

Thanks

not detected at the bios level, or in windows? i would expect the latter definitely. the former would mean theres a hardware problem of some kind.

as for the wd/maxtor conflict, whichever one is faster should go in the new one (provided theyre both working properly, of course). if theyre the same speed, use the wd and save yourself the extra data backup and format.

I asked a mate about the not detected HDD n he said its because the bios is too old and probaly only supports upto 20gig?

The thing with the 2 HDD's is that i dont know what speeds they are, i imgaine the WD is the slower speed, and the Maxtor could possibly be 7200 but i dont know. its definately a newer model.

speed is on the label. or you can look up the model number online.

bios should still detect it, just might have some weird ass properties. not particularly important. easy enough to find out if its a bad drive, put it in your current comp.

funny you should say that. i put it in my current comp, detected at bios, detected in windows under device manager, but not found in "My Computer", so i cant access it.
I dno why but im confident that if i put it in a new setup as the only HDD with windows on it'll work fine.

if you havent partitioned and formatted it, it wont show up.

o right, that'll be why,
i knew it was something like that.

thanks

go ahead and get the SATA hdd, i got 2 WD 80 gig in my machine and the rock. small cables are good for cooling reasons too.
