AMD64 3000+ skt 754 vs 3200+ Winchester skt 939

Hi,
The plan was that i was going to get the AMD64 3000+ skt 754, but now ive seen the skt 939 3200+ winchester for only £30 more.

Would it be worthwhile to the skt 939 one?

Ive seen some mean looking skt 939 boards that will take upto 4gb ram with 4 slots and 1000 fsb etc.

Still not sure on which board to get as ive seen alot more than i thought were available, bit of a head jam. TOO MUCH CHOICE!

Ive just noticed that the skt 939 chips with the same model number seem to be of a lower spec than the 754's. e.g
3200+ 2.0GHz 1MB 754-pin
3200+ 2.0GHz 512KB 939-pin

although the 939 has dual channel ram support and fsb upto 2000 rather than 1800.
How exactly do u get the fsb upto 1800? and with dual channel support do u need special dual channel ram?

Sorry about all the questions i jus love learning.

all ram thats compatable with the board will be dual channel.

this review is for a specific motherboard, but should help you evaluate the 939. it has pics.

The 1mb cache on the socket 754 matter because 754 chips dont have Dual Channel for the ram. S939 chips do.

Get the 939. Its way better. Im about to get a 3500+ Winchester myself.

OTS, yeah i read a couple of reviews on that board b4, im havin trouble clickin links at the mo coz my svchost just crashed (again). Running W2KSP4 to fix.
I read a few forum posts and apparently it has problems with accepting ram and is very specific or some of them had bad capacitors. I cant find a list of reccomended ram though. i was going to get geil value ram with alu HS.

sorry can i just add a few things.
I also read somewhere that dual channel memory isn't as important on AMD machines anyway, but read that the skt 939 are more future proof which i can understand.

Also something about not being able to use all 4 dimm slots running at 400mhz, apparently if u put more than 2 in they run at 333? Its all a bit technical.

*off topic a bit but do u think its wise for me to upgrade my win2kprosp4 installation on current PC to XPpro using the upgrade option.

-------------------------
PIII 1Ghz
256ram @ 100mhz (yes i know)

are you asking if you should upgrade to xp or if you should use the upgrade option vs a format/install?

the first, not if 2k is working well for you.
the second, format/install if possible.
