woohoo....my first pc problem...

I got everything together finally...However, I just ran into my first problem...at first it was just with the websites. Everytime i would enter a website such as ati.com or stay on a browser for a while, the monitor would just turn black andi would have to restart! Just before that though, the mouse would freeze for just a second...Then the problem got worse though. The screen is beginning to turn black much earlier! all i have to do is leave the computer on at windows on the desktop for a minute if im lucky and the thing turns black....Very strange...i got all the drivers installed... i didnt try going on the internet before that though...
Im thinking that i might have installed the video driver wrong...i didnt first remove any default windows XP drivers before...
i have done no configuration what so ever...as in display settings yet!
HELp me guys!! This is annoying as hell...

What are your temperatures? Sounds like it might be heat related.

Posted by: redwench

somethings up. heats a good place to start. but run sandra, that should spit out more info than you want to know.

ummm... i remember seeing on something called overdrive that the temp was 41C(i dont know of what though!) ....My case temps according to my reading on the front of the case..was about 81F...which is 27C....
I have 6 case fans! 1 of them is 120mm ...and one of them is in my PSU...my wiring is terrible...maybe that increases the heat or something??

Well i have talked to the tech support at powercolor....and he has told me tp go to the bios and increase the graphics aperature size to 128 mb from 64mb....and it worked...for a while
i installed all my games and they ran flawlessly for a LONG TIME....however i restarted again and the random blackouts started occuring again...once during doom 3...and once during normal internet browsing...both were 10 mins or less into windows...
This might be related though...I did not install any monitor software! Do i have to?
oh and btw....all the latest drivers are now installed!
Thanks

well, of course you need to install your monitor drivers...........

but check that your bios settings are where you want them and havent reverted.

your case temps are pretty much irrelevant. your chipset, cpu, gpu, and perhaps hard drive temps are.

"well, of course you need to install your monitor drivers..........."
ooops....I think ill try that as soon as i get home...
I'll call back tech support and see what he will tell me to do next!

I really dont think temps are anything to do with this....because my screen just blacks out....EVERYTHING ELSE IS running and spinning...maybe im wrong though...I think ill try to install the monitor drivers!

Are there any bios settings that i should change? or are there any that you guys have changed? because i really didnt mess with that..except for the aperture size that the tech support guy told me to change!
THanks

okay....i installed the monitor software and still nothing!...i ended up calling the asus tech support! One guy responded and told me that it was the agp slot that was screwed up. So he told me that he will send a new motherboard.
Hopefully this would solve the problem! I'll get back to you guys as soon as the new motherboard is hooked up...
Thanks

Just curious, what do moniter drivers do? I mean, its plug and play, my moniter doesn't even drivers per se, just a little diagnostics program. I don't think I have ever installed moniter drivers on any of my systems and never had a problem, so what benefits do some have?

Posted by: redwench

if your monitor doesnt have drivers, then they are unnecessary.....

their benefits are pretty similar to video card drivers, controller drivers, sound card drivers, etc. the thing will work at a basic level without them, but its not going to work well.

Posted by: quiksilver87

ummm....my monitor did come with drivers...i did install them and the problem still did persist...i really don't think this is a monitor related problem!!

Let me tell you why and correct me if im wrong. When i first got into windows i directly opened windows media player and started playing a song from the HD. i waited for the screen to turn off. When it did, the music also turned off and changed into a low pitched beep! Hence , the monitor can't be the problem! I am thinking that the graphics card cant possibly also be the problem since it has nothing to do with the sound!

Here is something else that is wierd and also contradicts what i just said about a hardware problem...This problem only began to occur after I installed a couple of drivers. Before that the pc was NOT screwing up!!!It first started when all the drivers were installed except for maybe the graphics driver(not 100% sure about that i have to double check with my cousin).
So i really am confused....what should i do?? These 2 paragraphs really contradict each other!!!
My CPU and GPU temps are both at around 40C....

i ended up calling asus support and they told me the APG slot was decfective....i am RMAing my mobo....What the helll....why dont i take a chance??

Posted by: redwench

never said it was the monitor, just that you needed to install the proper drivers for it.

sounds like you installed the wrong drivers, or installed them incorrectly.

Posted by: quiksilver87

hmm...so i should try doing that before i RMA?

Posted by: redwench

yes, a nice format and install would probably be a good idea before giving up.

Posted by: quiksilver87

hmm ok....but what about windows activation? wouldnt i have to activate again? I already activated the first time...I think by now they have my serial number and i didnt take down the activation number that they gave me the first time?
Could i just activate again with the same serial number? or would they deny me because the serial number was already used?

Posted by: redwench

you can activate it as many times as you wish. format and install daily if thats what you want.

Posted by: quiksilver87

wow....so i can just call like the first time and they will give me the activation number even with my same serial number?

Posted by: redwench

call?????

what kind of OS are you running?

Posted by: quiksilver87

im running winows XP....Yes call, i have to call in order to activate the windows XP...I call/email my serial number and they give me the activation number....if i dont call, i will only be able to enter windows 50 times...after that it will disable itself.

Anyways, today i just restored my system(system restore) back to when the drivers werent installed...And now it works just fine...I installed all the drivers except for the linkysys driver...it is working fine untill now...and i can actually play games. Very wierd....i have to wait untill i get onto the internet because that was when the problem first started...

Posted by: redwench

you mean youve activated your xp home so many times, on different systems, youve now run out of the normal activations? should have bought pro.

Posted by: quiksilver87

i have windows xp pro!!! no i dont mean that....this was the first time i have activated it...In order to activate windows(i can actually use windows when it isnt activated), you must call in/email/whatever and giver them your serial number so they can give you an activation number! Its not i big deal i can easily call them and ask them about whether i could activate twice with the same serial number...i thought i would get a quicker response from you!! no big deal...thanks anyways...
i temporarily have the problem fixed...it might be permanently fixed if i get the internet to work!
