lousy FPS - GeForce 3 Elsa
(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

hey, i have 1.7GHz Pentium4 128 RDRAM and a GeForce3 Elsa. Iv'e been playing d2 for quite a while now and it seems like the preformance in diablo with my computer is pretty lame.
For example, at Chaos Sanctaury, standing at the middle, where diablo appears, I get around 5-10 FPS.
At Throne of Destruction, after Baal laughs I get this small lag and the game freeze. When someone enters my town portal or a Barb casts Battle Orders I get around 1-10 FPS... Near Shnek etc.
Now I heard that the preformance of the game is more realated to the ping you have not the computer you got. because then you have more data coming in a short term and the computer have to think more...
This issue really annoys me and I would like to know how I can increase my FPS rate and make it steady.
Thanks in advance.

Well, this is D2 for you. You have the best video card you can get and it is still bad. I am not sure how you can get more FPS, but i think that it is just the game. D2 is just a badly made game.
I lag and get bad FPS in that game and i have cable and a decent video card.

Then I guess buying extra 128 RAM is a waste money

Ram is never a waste of money. Your system will us as much as you throw at it. Get yourself another stick of 128 or even better yet, a larger module....memory prices are cheap right now. You will notice a decrease in accessing the HDs for virtual memory. If you do photoshop activities, you will notice that filters will finish a little quicker, etc....Ram is a good investment for everyday activities. It will even help you out a little in games, although to a lesser extent. With your system specs...don't hobble it with only 128Meg of RAM.
As for it helping with D2...not much if any. its lag from the Internet. Depends on what servers you connect to and what servers you link through. Your connection is only as good as the weakest link. Same goes for everyone else you play with. If one of them has a bad connection, it will effect everyone else playing because the packets will be slow to move back and forth from computer to computer.

So your saying, that if I play with 10 ping my game will work smooth with no lags either on Throne of Destruction or Chaos ?

If you really want it to work right, get a VooDoo. heh
I have gotton a max of 300 FPS i think, and an average of probably 130 FPS.
Plus the lighting effects are better too ...
My system is a
P3 700
512 megs SDRAM
VooDoo5 5500
SBLive X-Gamer
Win2k Pro
Cable Connection
10 ping would defenitly not solve your prob. The system can be a drawback too, especially if you are only getting 10 FPS max. 30 FPS is the min I would even settle for, but with your sys specs I would guess you should be getting ATLEAST 50 if not 70 MIN.
only 128 megs of ram? I would have atleast 256. I doubt thats the problem though ...
you have newest drivers for vid card? What mode are you running the game in (direct3d, directdraw)?

Yeah, well I got 2 computers one of them have Voodoo3 on it, and I guess I can say that the lightning effects are way better than my GeForce3. I can really see the difference.
today I checked, I played in single player with 0 ping and I saw some imporvment, I can't say it's like i expected but I guess it's better. Although 0 ping is beyond my imagination because I live far from US, so I'll have to settle on 300.
My average FPS are around 40-50 but that is only when there are no big monsters such as baal diablo andy etc.
I forgot to mention that I hacked diablo, meaning I don't use a CD, I think that's somehow related to my FPS since it loads more from the Hardisk. Maybe that's the problem? Anyone tried to play without a CD?

Diablo 2's direct 3d support just plain sucks.
Play in 2D and you won't have the framerate problem.

Yeah, I used to play d2 without a cd... but that was before I bought my own. *gasp*
I used a virtual cd drive and borrowed a friends cd. As far as I can remember, I didn't notice any difference in performance when I got my own copy and started using the cd. In fact, if you just do a full install and disable the music, the computer will rarely access the drive.

I just installed winXP read my other topic. about this one with the virtual CD. I also installed daemon virtual CD so far it works good.
Thx
