I am formatting my hard drive. for windows 98 . What exactly do I type in command prompt ?

fdisk

first you fdisk, then you format.

you should have an option that says something like...delete primary dos partition...select that...then you will need to create a primary dos partition...then you insert the cd rom and format...and then install your os.... good luck

put it in....boot up...at the command prompt type fdisk...you should then see several options of which one will be to delete primary dos partition...then follow steps from my previous entry.

fdisk is basically a dos command that allows you to go into your harddrive and set up parameters. Basically it helps you partition your harddrive and set it up the way you want it. Such as my harddrive is 40 gigs. I want to make 10 gigs of that my c: drive to set up windows 98. The other 30 gigs I want to use it for game installation, mp3's, anything I like to save and keep just in case I have to reformat windows again in the future. Like macknight said, run fdisk at command prompt after you loaded you 98 boot disk up. Make sure you select cd rom option on startup, so you can run your windows 98 cd.
When you get done run the fdisk and get your disk the way you want them. When done with fdisk, esc out of fdisk. From there you should be prompt to reboot the computer to make your changes come to affect. If not reboot anyway. Keep your 98 boot disk in your floppy for you need to boot up on that again, select the cd rom option again at the beginning. Let the boot disk run through and when at prompt again, instead of typing fdisk your going to type format c: . It will give you a warning about erasing the drive, which is what you want to do. After the format is done, make sure you have windows 98 in your cdrom. Then type setup and it should start setup at this point. Hope I sum this up for you.
