two questions...

1) did you do the 10.3.6 update

2) what kind of computer do you have?

im on jaguar, not panther and i have an early g4 dual 450
that normally doesnt have any problems. the hd has been fine for awhile
then the partition ive been using the most appears as unmounted
and doesnt show up on my desktop.

ok...do you have disk warrior for os x??? run the rebuild and you could get lucky. A loss of partition like that can be attributed to a failing hard drive...some kind of corruption which was introduced...and a few other things i'm sure. I have successfully recovered several partitions using disk warrior...hope you have it.

no i dont have disk warrior, i have Data Rescue , which doesnt seem to be helping.

have you tried repairing permissions while booted from the os x disc...as well as using disc repair while booted from os x disc?

Posted by: masher

ok i found disk warrior and got it going...
it said it couldnt rebuild that particular part of the HD because:

this disk appears to be a mac os extended disk
this disk does not appear on the desktop
this disk is 58.91 GB in size.

it sounds like the version of disk warrior you have is for os x.3 and better because it was complaining about extended format. there is another version of disk warrior that works for jaguar...now i'm guessing you may not have it...if you have extremely important data...it may be worth investing in. Or...take it to a shop that uses it.

oh wait what it says is :

directory cannot be rebuilt because...trying to access this disk (::3, ::4)

i dont think os extended is the problem because i just rebuilt the other 3/4 of the hd.

the thing about permissions you mentioned.. how exactly do i do that now?

Posted by: macknight

you can try to rebuild permissions from disk utility...however...it isn't as reliable as running the repair from disk utility when booted from the os x install disk.

had another thought...if you are able to remove your hdd from the external case and install it in your g4...you may have better success all the way around...attempt to run disk warrior again after installing in your g4, as well as data rescue...not to mention you could run repair permissions from your main hdd.

now you're talking about stuff i wouldnt know how to do
;(
how do i boot from the install disk?
(yes im an idiot)

Posted by: macknight

no you're not...ok...i'm guessing you have the disk...good...restart and hold the c key down until you see the spinning wheel...it will say preparing for installation and all that...when it gets to the install menu...go to the menu bar, and select disk utility...from there you can select your disk...and repair permissions...as well as try to repair disk...do that first...it may work...however...this is only truly beneficial if the ext. hdd is mounted in the g4...

otherwise...just go to disk utility...that is under applications>utilities>disk utility...and run both repair permissions and repair disk.

i mean....you are ok...sorry about that phrase...got in a hurry there.
