Mixing Memory

I just purchased a new PC and it says it has 512 Megs of PC 2700 DDR memory in it but when I pulled the chip to inspect, it says it is PC 3200.My question is,can I buy a stick of 2700 and install it beside the 3200 without any problems. Why would they state that it was 2700 when it is 3200 anyway. The reason I ask is that I found a really good deal on some 2700 memory. Thanks and all replies appreciated.

I believe it will work, but you will probably have to set the latency values higher so both Dimms can run in sync.
I would just grab the same type of DImm as you already have. It will perform better that way.

just because a stick of ram says 3200 on the side doesnt mean it is running at 3200 speed when it is inside the slot. you are underclocking your 3200 ram down to 2700. the 3200 ram can handle a bus speed of 200 (and front side bus of 400). your system is running with a bus speed of 166 (and a front side bus of 333).
placing a stick of 2700 ram beside a stick of 3200 ram that is only being used as fast a 2700 ram wont do any harm. but it will limit your cpu upgrade potential (on a faster 400 fsb if your mobo supports it) unless you want to ditch your newer stick of 2700.
purchase a stick of ram that has a cas latency value that is less or equal to your current stick of 3200 ram. otherwise you will be deminishing the effect of you increased ram.
the 2700 or 3200 choice may be a waste depending on whether your mobo can handle a cpu with a faster fsb. but wont affect your current performance in a negative way.
knowing your motherboard would help us answer your issues more specifically.
