linksys wireless adapter pci/winxpsp2 boot failure

when installing wireless adapter PCI card in spare PCI slot, PC fails to boot beyond first screen (F1/F10/logo). Remove said card + boots fine. Have tried installing the drivers before the card with no difference. Also tried a different brand of wireless PCI card before with same results. Have tried card in different PCI slots but result unchanged. Entered BIOS on one occasion but did not notice anything of direct relevance to change!!
Yr help please.
PC = HP pavilion T430
OS = windows XP home, service pack 2
PCI car = Linksys wireless adaptor WMP54GV2
