please help me fix FFXI from freezing!

hello readers. i am having a problem with FFXI and im not sure what i can do to stop it.
basically, the game lasts about 30mins before it decides to freeze up for some reason.
i asked people in the game if they had any idea what the cause could be, some one told me that it was a resource problem..... i thought *YES!* hes exactly right!
i had AIM (AOL) running see, and this was eating my memory, even though i got a gig of RAM. so,.... i phoned aol and asked them if there was a way of using the 1mg connection
without having to load up they're *MEMORY MUNCHING AIM*. they showed me how to do just that, and i was happy thinking i finnally fixed my problem.......
(sorry if this is dragging, bare with me gettin to point now)
so i loaded up FFXI and began to chill out.... 2 hours later ...... DAAAAAAMMMMMMM!!!!!!
it had to freeze up did'nt it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!******
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!! PLZZZZZZZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MY PC spec in basic terms : pentium4 3.0ghz
1 gig of RAM
ATI radeon 9600
200gig HDD
(yes i have directX 9.0b)
Yes its a beast!!!! it can play anything; doom3 halflife2 etc etc etc with no problems at all
SO THE BIG QUESTION IS: WTF MAKES FFXI SO SPECIAL
