Scientists Debate Blending of Human, Animal Forms

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

MSNBC has a very interesting article up on the possibility and ethics of the genetically blending human/animal tissue.

The most radical experiment, still not conducted, would be to inject human stem cells into an animal embryo and then transfer that chimeric embryo into an animal's womb. Scientists suspect the proliferating human cells would spread throughout the animal embryo as it matured into a fetus and integrate themselves into every organ.

Such "humanized" animals could have countless uses. They would almost certainly provide better ways to test a new drug's efficacy and toxicity, for example, than the ordinary mice typically used today.

Man this stuff is scary. I mean it has some valueable uses, but the potential for abuse is insane.

"The Island of Dr. Moreau" springs to mind...

I remember back in HS in biology class, this dude who was funny asked the teacher durring a discussion about monkeys, 'Can a human and a monkey mate?' and the teacher kicked him out of class. That was hilarious.

yes, thats where hiv supposedly came from. producing successful offspring is another thing entirely.

different species can mate and produce offspring. horses and donkeys for example, but mules are sterile (for the most part ).
